Bad Ammo Thread

Never had any issues with the Traditional Ammo manufactures Remington Winchester etc. Only lesser IMO brands like Ammo inc, arms corp . I shoot mostly 380 for the last 10 years or so

I hate Magtech 5.56. Every other 5.56 would hold close to my LPVO zero (winchester white box and S&B) but Magtech was side of barn off through the scope. I thought I was crazy. I even put the piece in the vice and loaded one of each into the mag. Winchester was dead on, S&B just a little off, and Badtech way off. Ended up mag dumping the rest. Will never buy Magtech again.

Federal syntech 9mm. I bought some at a range when I was out of ammo and it was all they had. So many light primer strikes and failures to extract out of three different guns, I swore never to use it again.

Ditto at the machine gun shoots. Either 147g or 150g, The vendor was selling that junk, and whether it was the Glock with the giggle switch, the MP5, the Maxim 9, the AR-9, The Suomi, the Cobray, the Uzi, Not a single effin one could make it through a mag without FTF or FTE. And there were like 9 other guns it wouldn't run in.

I even swapped a guy a box of my New Republic 115g for the box he bought so he could actually cycle guns reliably. I took it home, and it proceeded to not run in my caniks.

Remington Thunderbolt .22LR High Speed ammunition from the 1990s.

This 22 Long rifle ammo is complete garbage. Purchased a brick of 500 rounds back in the 1990s. Decided this fall 2024 to finally shoot some of it in some my revolvers and semi auto handguns. Handguns were all clean and chambers were clean. This ammo would not fully fit or chamber in any of my handgun's revolvers and autos. Ammo was clean and stored properly no defects or corrosion. Also, when you tried to chamber a round sometimes the bullet head would dislodge from the case. (Funny the box says NEW IMPROVED.) Maybe a bad Manufactuing lot batch got by the QC Dept.

One of the worst .22 rounds ever produced.

Try running it through some already used tumbler media or fresh animal bedding. the wax-like coating they shipped that stuff in.... for lack of a better term, just "picks up" stuff. The animal bedding will take it off and absorb it. You can then hang onto the media, or toss it. Works great as a finishing media.

That being said, yep, trash ammo.

I do the same with used corn cob then clean the dust off by rolling them around in a rag, quick blast of Remi-dry lube, then another roll around. Works great.

I don't have much to offer as I've only ever ran with name brands, no steel case except (Wolf) for use in an AKM or my own hand loads. The one with the most comments seems to be Thunderbolts. I keep a couple bricks of it lying around though they get the above treatment with corn cob. I use them as foulers and send a couple mags, cylibers, etc. into the berm as I clean my stuff after each session and it helps settle things in prior to shooting. Also, for some unknown reason, my single six loves that crap. I guess it's the way of .22's, you got to try a bunch of variations.

After seeing some of the posts in the DE 50AE thread, it got me thinking about this. What ammo have you personally had problems with? Not "My buddy use ABC and it blew up his gun" or "I read online that XYZ blows up, has light primer strikes, etc."

From that DE post, sounds like I want to avoid New Republic and Double Tap, at least.
What is wrong with New Republic?

The most unreliable ammunition that I have found is Winchester .22LR

I have been shooting for 40 years; and it's the worst that I have found.

The old "X-spurt" ammo. Given that I think I was paying $5.24 for a box of 550, I really never complained. I think I still have some of one box left.

That’s because the Syntech especially the 150 gr is made for action shooting sports (USPSA/IDPA) to make minor power factor. It’s not loaded nearly as warm as your run of the mill 115 or 124 gr 9mm. I’m not familiar with MP5’s Uzi’s etc but if they have stiffer springs, they prob won’t cycle well with lower powered 150 gr ammo. That ammo is made for pistols trying to meet the 125 minor power factor

If that's the case, the vendor is an actual moron for attempting to sell it at a machine gun shoot. It wouldn't even run in direct blowback guns with a can.

Even @38ExtraSpecial had issues with the brass for reloading.
Yeah their brass is garbage. All sorts of issue reloading it.
Never had a problem withNR. Both My Tisas px-3 9mm and 1911 9mm eats it like candy.
Eveyone says they are junk guns.

The glock of course runs it as well
It may shoot OK but from what I’ve seen their brass is so inconsistent it’s a wonder it works. Case mouths being as much as .003” thicker than they should be. How can you chamber a bullet with brass that thick? Easy you crimp the ever loving hell out of it. Now you have some bullet that looks like a heeled bullet. Not good for consistency or accuracy. I’m surprised they don’t all hit the target sideways.
I throw their brass in the scrap bin as a find it.

New Republic 357 ?

Yea, that's the ticket!

This is/was a 2 *day* old 340PD

That would be the third .357 I've heard blowing up from New Republic .357.

Which means it might be hot enough to cycle the .357 Desert Eagle.

The listed velocity for that ammo is 1300 fps or so and hi 500s just under 600 FT-lbs.
