Blew up my 340PD...

I am about as big an S&W fan as they come but I will say this: it is my humble opinion that S&W engineering is really pushing the envelope with Magnum J frames in lightweight alloys. Perhaps pushing too far.

I personally would not fire a single .357 Magnum through an Airlite/M&P J frame. I have no concerns about the Night Guards, since they have beefier frames (K, L, and N) and stainless steel (instead of titanium) cylinders.

Anna, glad to hear the gun is the only thing that suffered damage.

They should fix it.

The 340PD is basically a guaranteed "will blow up eventually" gun from smith. If you're really invested in it i would advise training with one and only carrying/testing the other.

@walter62 I can give you a trophy perhaps for the best 340pd blow up!!! Thats pretty spectacular. Most of them, the gun cracks in 2 places and stops working.

ETA: 2 days old? Daaaaaaayum. Never heard of one blown up that fast. Clearly a metallurgical defect or something if it wasn't an overload.

Here's a pic of post-fired brass (but not from the explosion cuz the barrel is somewhere else in Littleton) from the prior cylinder-ful. @DW357 I dont think it was one of mine. Shoulda been at best 13.0 of N110 and 14-ish is 100% case fill. But some of those factory rounds look, um, 'flat'.

@walter62 so the cylinder itself just disintegrated ?it took a moment for me to realize that there was no cylinder chunks in your picture. Glad you are unhurt.... that could have gone worse!

Well, there was a small chunk of the *titanium* :( cylinder remaining. it was observed
to be in the 6 o'clock position. The rest of the cylinder is somewhere around Back40 or the surrounding hills :(

Honestly, I had a Delta glove on and for a few moments, I did say 'shit, I hope they are all
still there' when I took it off.

Update
Smith and Wesson has finally rendered an opinion after two months and the opinion is “f*** you customer“. No warranty and no responsibility. They are sending the destroyed revolver back to me.

Guess I will make a Christmas ornament out of it
you going after New Republic?

Are you considering reaching out to the ammo manufacturer?

ETA: hello @Palladin

Apologies, I thought I had already indicated that new Republic, a.k.a. target sports had quickly sent me a check for the gun and all ammo, so in the final analysis I am satisfied and made whole. Honestly, I don’t blame Smith & Wesson since to me it clearly was an ammo issue.
Oh that’s good at least. They are probably happy they don’t have to send you a check for a new hand. Wild.

Read the TSUSA reviews, this ammo had some issues blowing up guns. They changed the description to say, not for use with Henry rifles. Now it's blowing up guns on NES.

Personally I would stay away from this brand...at least in 357.

Apparently, the problem experienced in Henry rifles is that cases split and can get stuck in the chamber. I highly doubt that effect is unique to Henry rifles. It's pretty common for a lever gun of various makes, e.g. and especially Rossi, to have a slightly oversized chamber. I've seen reviews that noted it with Chiappas, also. You can tell it by measuring the brass of full-power loads. Something's wrong with that ammo. Even if the chamber is slightly oversized, the brass should be able to obturate without splitting.

Smith has reached their "but f*** you" stage of their existence. In fairness though this probably was an ammo issue. " The typical 340PD blow up" the gun is still mostly intact, just cracked in several places.

Epilogue

My new Christmas ornament has arrived back from SW.

That ends the story.

@walter62 that sucks!

My beloved Black Betty (S&W 340PD) is out of commision. Shooting factory loaded .357 magnum Saturday, she done 'blowd up! [shocked]

Thankfully, nobody was hurt when it happened.
Does anyone else remember the OP, @K-DUB? I met her at NES "Green Shoots" back in the day. She was very cool.

I wanted to include photos of her on the firing line, but I can't find them at the moment.

Better to be made whole that made hole.
