rscalzo, thanks for the tip. Somehow the gas rings did manage to move, and two openings were almost touching, enough to make a space. That and the end of the bolt had some carbon build up on it that I hadn't noticed until I got it under bright light.
The carbon seems fairly hard to remove, so I have a feeling this might have been something to do with it.
Right now I'm soaking the bolt and assembly parts in cleaner, and when they are spic and span I will try again.
