Here's a link from Empire Arms directly addressing the sporterized antique gun issue:

Pre-1899 Firearms FAQ

Q: Does sporterizing or re-chambering an antique end its exemption?

A: Sporterizing, re-barreling, or re-chambering an antique gun does not effect its legal status. Thus, I
can legally sell folks Mauser sporters that have been converted to modern cartridges (like .308 Winchester!),
without having to go through the "FFL to FFL" hassle.

Obviously, a gun retailer isn't ATF.

yeah sporterizing shouldn't change the status of an antique. Its already considered not a firearm by ATF, unlike C&R. Some modification/sporterization of those can disqualify them.

I know there was some talk a few years back making anything 100 years old an antique....then someone remembered the M1911.
