Occasionally you'll hear about a PO who for some reason can't get, or losses their LTC and the Chief will let them carry on the badge. Meaning they can carry when they are on duty.

But is there actually a law in MA that allows this?

I know it's done, and obviously the police aren't going to arrest one of their own, and my question isn't about if it is right.

I'm just trying to find out if the law allows this.

Not sure about laws to cite. I know the local pd issues ltcs to each officer. However, the Sheriffs dept I worked for did not. I believe "carrying on the badge" only covers carry for official use/ duty.

Mgl Ch. 41§ 98-
"They may carry within the commonwealth such weapons as the chief of police or the board or officer having control of the police in a city or town shall determine..."

No mention of restrictions to on duty.

I heard of quite a few getting new Glocks by being Sheriff Deputy Auxiliary something or another. Thought of doing it, but just not enough reason for me.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for.
