Child shoots intruder during home break-in
By David Spunt - email

PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - A ten-year-old boy left home alone with his sister used his mother's gun to shoot an intruder in the face, police said.

Late Tuesday, West Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputies received a call to a Port Allen apartment complex after several shots rang out from inside one of the apartments. "You are out here trying to work and for someone to come and do that and invade your home is very hard," the children's mother said. She asked to not be identified.

Deputies say Dean Favron and Roderick Porter knocked several times on the apartment door. The two young children, a ten-year-old boy and eight-year-old girl, stood on the other side, terrified. "He told his sister to be quiet and seconds later, they started kicking on the door and finally kicked the door in," said Sheriff Mike Cazes. The two children ran to their mother's bedroom closet.

In a panic, the ten-year-old grabbed his mother's gun for protection. "He did what I told him to do. I never told him to get the gun, but thank God he did," she said. Once the two suspects opened the door, threatening the kids, deputies say the boy fired a bullet into the lip of Roderick Porter. The two men were taken to the hospital, where they were later arrested. "It's just hard. I don't understand why they would do that. I know they have little brothers and sisters and they wouldn't want anyone to break into their house," said the mother.

Each man is held on $150,000 bond. A third suspect, a juvenile, was taken to a local detention center. One of the suspects, Dean Favron, just finished serving almost seven years in prison for aggravated assault on a Baton Rouge police officer and two carjacking charges. He was released on June 6th.

Both men will appear before a judge next month.

Assachusets version:

Mother was charged with failure to properly secure the weapon. She was found guilty, is serving 5-10 years in Walpole and the children are in Protective Services custody.

Meanwhile, the 'victims' are preparing a law suit, saying they had no reason to be shot as they were just looking for money to help them get by.

Seven years in jail, they let him out and guess what, he's still the same f*cked up person he was back then. Rotating door at it's best, it only took him a month to recommit. Kudos to the kid though for being able to protect his family.

The poor kids. I hope the little guy is okay after having to do that. Cudos to him for thinking of the gun, and THANK HEAVENS he didn't have to deal with a trigger lock.

I used to have a t-shirt from the JPFO that had "trigger locks, rapist approved'' on it.

It's too bad Moms gun wasn't a 12 gauge.
I hope to boy and girl are ok too.

Maybe I am old fashioned, but I believe kids age 10 & 7 should not be left alone for more than a few minutes.Even if these 2 morons were not breaking the door down, kids and available guns is a dangerous mixture period.

This is a good story to shove down liberals throats when they say "kids and guns don't mix", yeah maybe when there not taught properly but obviously this kid was taught well by his mom.

Exactly!

Kids left home alone, kids left home alone with unsecured guns?

It's pretty lucky that the story ended this way, it could just have easily ended in "Kid Shoots Sister Accidentally" or "Robbers Shoot Kids With Gun They Found In Home". This story could have been much sadder, everyone's lucky it turned out the way it did.

When I was 10 & my sister was 9, we were left alone on occasion for brief periods of time. We didn't stab each other with the kitchen knives or jump of the second floor porch. (We did that stuff while my mom was home.[smile]) . It's easy to say that the mother was negligent, but who knows what the exact situation was.

I'm glad the kids are safe now, & I hope the little boy doesn't suffer mental trauma b/c of what happened.

It has nothing to do with luck if you TEACH your children well. TEACH them what to do and not to do. TEACH them....

Leave luck to the lottery.[thinking]

Actually that's the opposite of old-fashioned. My brother and I were routinely home alone after school at that age, and so were many or most of our friends. We all had house keys on a string around our neck and let outselves in after school and took care of ourselves just fine. No harm ever came of it, and I don't think, especially in that day that anyone would have considered my parent irresponsible for doing it.

I'm not saying I would necessarily do that with my kids, we'll see when they get to that age. I'm just saying that it is in fact "old fashioned" to trust kids of that age to take care of themselves at the parent's discretion.

That's nothing but pure speculation on your part, and although there is admittedly little information to go by here, speculating on the information we do have doesn't support your opinion that those outcomes are equally or more likely. The kids could have just as easily ended up raped and dead if there wasn't a gun accessible, if you want to speculate.

From my reading of the story, the mother was at work, and she had instructed her children what to do if someone tried to break into the house. My conclusion from that would be that the mother routinely leaves the children alone for some amount of time, probably every day after school, while she is working.

I might be going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing the boy probably never shot his sister before the other times they were left alone. I'm also guessing it's not just a coincidence the gun was left unsecured where the boy knew where it was on the day the scumbags decided to kick the door in.

For all we know, the mother did an excellent job teaching her kids about guns and not to touch them. And just maybe even a 10-year-old can have judgement to know when his life is at risk and it's ok to ignore that teaching.

I have to agree with you here.

[thinking]

I would be more willing to leave a trained, firearms-educated ten-year old with guns accessible than many adults I know.

The same story text here, but also pictures of the dirtbags and a link to a TV news video segment:

http://www.wafb.com/Global/story.asp?S=10741492&nav=menu57_5

There are a few additional facts in the video segement than appear in the text story, including that the two asshats pulled guns on the kids hiding in the closet. If anyone thinks there is any way they didn't deserve to be shot, I'd like to hear it.

Edit: Hmm, actually I see that's the same link originally posted. Not sure if it was updated with the video since I first saw it or if I just missed it.
