Cleaning rust

I guess this is the forum for this kind of question...what's the best way to remove light surface rust from a P229 mag? I suppose I could use Scotch Brite, but I don't want to end up removing the finish on the mag.
 
There's another similar thread somewhere on the same subject.

Four aught steel wool with a little WD 40 followed by a good lube oil should do the trick.

I second the 0000 steel wool and gun oil. I like the rem oil for this as it seems a bit thicker than CLP. I use a gentle circular motion, periodically wiping the area clean with a rag as I go. I get good results using this method to remove light surface rust. If you have rust in a nook or cranny that's not easy to get to with your fingers, (like slide serrations) put a small piece of wool on an old tooth brush. That method works for me.
