I am gathering parts in preparation for my first SBR build. I have been doing tons of research on this, and would like to pick the minds of my fellow NES brothers and sisters. I have thick skin so feel free to bash away.

I have decided to go with a 10.5 upper, and have been looking at the MAS Defense one pictured above. So here are my questions:

1) Have any members had any dealing or experience with MAS Defense?

2) Would the flash can on that upper be MA compliant, once I receive it and get it pinned? The MAS Defense site list nothing whether the flash can is a suppresor, hider, brake, or compensator.

- I have done a lot of searching and have found little on flash cans. I am aware that ones like the Noveske KX3/5 are listed by BATFE as flash suppressors (NO NO in MA), and I am wanting to stay in compliance with the AWB even though this is a NFA item. I am also aware that flash cans are not designed to reduce recoil, muzzle rise, or flash signature. They are simply designed to direct the gasses and noise away (forward) from the shooter.

3) What would be some of the members recomendations on other 10.5 uppers at a decent price ($400-$600) range?

All input is appreciated. Thanks. LuisG

I have the 10.5" mas defense upper with the flash can in my AR pistol. I'm pretty sure it's legal in mass since it's a 'muzzle break'? Not sure since I'm in nh, actually. It's definitely not a flash suppressor. Then again, the atf might somehow classify it as one. They make no sense.
As far as mas defense, I got the upper in 4 days, and once I fixed the bolt issue (a non mas defense part),it has work flawlessly. Looking to actually get the red dot zero'd in on it. Can't wait to go back and shoot it. Try shooting it around dusk, and you'll get some nice fireballs!
I got the 1/7 twist melonite nitride barrel.

I've had good luck with my MAS 7.5" barrel, NiB BCG, and quad rail. Going on 500 rounds with zero issues.

And as I said in another post, yes, the gas key was properly staked!

I recently got a mas defense 11.5" 1X9 melonited barrel. Have yet to shoot it, but it arrived and it looks nice. I'll have real feedback in 2 weeks.

massBRS, I'm definitely interested in how a range session goes for you. Does your 11.5 have a flash can or a muzzle break/compensator?

sweed, how do you know its classified as a "muzzle break", was that on MAS Defense website? I couldn't find anything on their website.

Yeah, mas defense website calls it a flash can muzzle break. Whatever you do, don't write a letter to the atf asking them, lol.

That's a real nice setup. I bet the range report is going to be insane.. What kind of trigger setup is that?

Thank you! I'm pretty excited about it. The trigger is a Geissele super dynamic combat, from the recent Geissele NES group buy

I have no experience with MAS Defense but if you're looking for an option:

http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-11-5-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/bcm-urg-m4-11.htm

You can add the BCG and Gunfighter CH for $70, maybe a Magpul handguard for short money.

I have the same upper with a Geissele rail and Noveske KX5, it's a really nice setup. There are some good linear comps(currently trying a Griffin on another 11.5 upper) out there.

Mas Defense is Chinese crap. If you can get the BCM package for similar money that's a no brainer for me.

I have a Mas Defense 4" keymod handguard on my 9mm AR and its fine for what it is but the aluminum is weak and the finish scratches very easily. I guess it depends what you value, I will be swapping it out for something better soon because it already bent and cracked on the bottom keymod rail.

I've looked into MAS when I was curious about putting together another upper for my SBR; something cheap, possibly 300blk.

But for your first go at an SBR (especially since you're gonna spend the $$ for big daddy's permission to have a little gun) then I would just spend some extra $$ on proven parts.

I'm not saying you have to go out and buy KAC or Noveske or whatever but there are companies like Aero Precision and the sort who make quality products for fair prices.

My little gun's upper is an AP upper with DD mk18 CHF barrel, Battlecomp 1.0, Centurion C4 cutout free float, BCM FA BCG and Gunfighter Mod 3 CH.

I'm doing my first SBR also and am stuck on triggers. Should I go with a standard mil spec trigger because it's a close in gun or a two stage just because they feel great. I've got a Geissele ssa-e or a RRA NM two stage. I'm leaning to mil spec am I wrong ? I'm building a nice gun not to cheap out.

I have a Geissele 2 Stage (G2S) trigger on mine, and truly like the feel. As other members have posted since your going to be spending a good chunk of change to have a SBR, don't go cheap on parts. Enjoy.

I have the SSA, SSA-E, ALG, and the trigger with the Anderson LPK. The ALG is my least favorite. For a basic trigger, the Anderson is decent but the SSA-E is the best.

By "close in gun" do you mean CQB or HD? Two very different applications to me. I wouldn't want a 2# trigger for either. I also wouldn't want a garbage mil spec trigger so maybe something like the mid range G triggers in the $140 range.
