Gold and silver prices are down

Silver’s big resistance level is $35, so naturally it’s hard to get through that. And it’s much easier for banks to manipulate the smaller silver market.

But 5 years in a row silver physical demand has exceeded annual production, so for 5 years we’ve been draining silver stockpiles and retail silver stashes. When that ends, silver will go up fast.

It is a MK IV , I believe it's commander size
 
Question for the group. Now that I've been buying silver online I'm getting a ton of advertising about "Commemorative" silver coins. I've always thought that they weren't worth what you were paying for them and that they might be hard to get rid of when you want to. So far I've seen Christian crosses, Chinese Pandas, Old West, Aztec Mayans and something called a Kookaburra. All .999 Silver 1 oz coins, but are they really worth getting? Some are on sale for below Spot pricing but not sure about them. Thoughts?

Sometimes I buy because the coin is cool. Sometimes I buy to stack. In the end, silver is silver so if it costs more it has to have value to you, and if it does then it's worth it.

I had to pay extra for a coin showing a banker hanging from a tree. Was it worth it? It makes me smile so yes, it's worth it to me.

Sometimes I just want to buy a bag of old quarters just to have a sack of silver.

If they are really .999 silver, you’ll find them slightly harder to sell than Silver Eagles, but only slightly. The bigger danger is that you get stuck with Chinese base metal counterfeits. Anything below spot is suspect.

“Classic” U.S. commemoratives from 1892-1950’s can be prized collectibles. Modern U.S. commemoratives from 1982 onward are less popular.

Then there’s a lot of “commemorative” coins produced for sale at inflated prices. The private firms who offer these often have a license agreement with places like the Cook Islands so they are nominally legal tender. You should only buy those for the fun of it.

I would buy now and think about the decision afterward.

Fine if you like it.

Nobody is going to want to buy that crap off you when it’s time to sell. Keep in mind the buyers have to find sellers. The only way to unload commemorative stuff is to sell under spot.

I've seen those adds in American Rifleman magazine as well [laugh] . I've never purchased those. My reccomendation is to purchase what you like and makes you most happy. If it's for barterability maybe stick with eagles and constitutional silver. If it's for a collection, and you value variety, then I think you can likely get a better deal elsewhere.

My other recommendation would be to visit your local coin shop. It might be beneficial to have a relationship with someone who can convert your dollars to silver and silver back to dollars. I try to visit my local dealers every couple months to remain on a first name basis. I most often buy coins but I do occasionally sell some as well.

I remember back in 2008 or 2009, the country was in the shiiter economically. Every bank was losing billions.

I remember telling my team that our little company made more money than Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Santander and Wells Fargo combined.

Legitimately .999 silver 1 ozt rounds cannot command the premium of coins, but as long as the source can be trusted, they're worth melt, unlike novelty shapes like a coke bottle crucifix.

For example, a real Perth Mint ".9999 Silver Kookaburra" coin (Australian issue currency) will be almost as easy to unload as a maple leaf.

I had to go back to late February to find anything on the subject, so I thought it would be worth mentioning that gold is right at 1600 and silver is under 30 for the first time in a while. I'm hoping the downward trend will continue a while longer, as people think the economy is getting better, there will be no QE3, and the wheels aren't coming off in Europe. This could be a good buying opportunity if you're still accumulating metals.

Interesting to compare post #1 (from about 13 years ago) with today's spot prices -- gold has nearly doubled, silver barely budged.
