Thanks for the info.... might be a little far for me though although (2 hrs) if youre in eastern ma might work for someone. IF i'm not mistaken any gunsmith should be able to do this..... you need an FFL to be a gunsmith from what i understand... just whether theyre willing or not.... I know i'm going to specifically ask for just a tab of silver solder.... hopefully the labor would be less that way too.

that's a "yes and no". IIRC it wasn't acceptable during the 1994 AWB and therefore iffy in states where it lives on in zombie form. no one has been prosecuted because of it so YMMV.

stateline is a good shop, haven't had any gunsmithing done there, but did drive up to buy parts i needed for a rifle. bought several things there in fact.

This AK is a Maadi parts kit built on US parts in the US by an unknown manufacturer. Barrel and receiver = US made. Don't know who made them, so don't know if it's good.

Nodak most likely for receiver. If so = good

barrel? eh... tough call. Most 7.62x39 barrels are good, but some can be wonky. If it's a green mountain or a AK Builder barrel.... then it's good to go.


As far as the PAP goes, some of the recent ones are good. Many of the old ones are shit. You just have to see the rifle to see if it's good. Look at internet examples of recent purchases and then gamble. Or go see one in person before you buy. Just don't buy shit from the classifieds here as I've seen some for sale that were ****ing retarded, or converted by 1911 gunsmiths in Massachusetts. I'd rather pound rusty nails in my dick before touching those pieces of shit.

A good conversion = mag well properly milled and front trunnion properly re-riveted. Bolt properly replaced with REAL Yugo bolt, not piss poor single stack pencil dick bolt.

Look up double stack vs single stack bolt on the internet. Add Yugo PAP in there, click google images, and ****ing scream.

Just be sure CAI is still converting them fine (as or recently, I haven't seen any but have read reviews from legit people I trust). But a PAP can be tits or it can be old balls. always salvagable, but if you don't know your head from your ass, then you are in a world of ****ing shit.

The reviews i see say its a double stack bolt and the trunnion is good, but i dont know shit about a trunion. HEre are the pics i found. Supposedly everything you mentioned is good on these. that one looks well done. You can see the milled out section in the front of the mag well (under where the bolt head locks up). It's the first of two "steps" from the bottom of the rifle to the bolt. You can also see the rivets in that first step: they are squished down adequately in the mag well- and if you look on the outside of the rifle, the heads have been re-done... they are slightly smaller than the other 2 rivets on each side of the front trunnion. A non issue- the important part is that the rivets have been redone and re-set, which they have been. The metal has also been refinished after milling.

And that bolt is a double stack bolt. I can't even believe I'm using that term: "double stack." So ****ing stupid. Single stack AK bolts are NOT AK bolts- they are abominations like Magpul on a AR-15. It ****ing looks stupid, doesn't serve it's purpose, and it makes you have an insatiable craving for cock if you own it.

"double stack" bolts are AKM bolts. Plain and simple. Single stack bolts are for the sporterized bullshit rfiles, and are basically narrower and have smaller bolt lugs, which makes their seating a little less reliable in a trunnion, but definitely makes it impossible for them to strip rounds out of a double stack mag effectively.

The folks at CAI in VT are doing a fine job converting them. It appears.... Just be sure to get a new one. Used ones in gun shops can be rape fests. And not the kind where you enter a sorority of virgins who are bent on losing their flowers than night.

Serbian AKs do look good. And they are more significant in your hands- the receiver is 1.5mm thick instead of the typical 1.0mm thickness of the standard AKM. The barrel parts are a little beefier due to a barrel OD that is slightly larger around the journals (it doesn't neck down as much as a AKM barrel) and the wood stock is attached in a more robust manner to the rear trunnion. All in the name of launch'n 'nades.

Mitchell Arms imported a bunch of them before 1989 that got canned due to ATF worries about the 3rd hole that used to be in their receivers. These recent PAPs look the part of those mitchells- CAI did a good job of keeping the 922r compliance while retaining that "look" of a sexy serbian.

They certainly are tempting. I don't own a serbian AK yet. And if I wasn't such a sucker for beat up parts kits from when we bombed the shit out of them, I'd probably pick one up. I've never bought an AK before though.

there is no bayonet lug on these models, so all you'd have to take care of (in MA) is the brake. pin it and be done with it.

Call around. Don't just go to one person. Explore your options [wink]

Unfortunately I dont have many options for gunsmiths..... i'm in western ma. One gunsmith around me doesnt impress me and has bad reviews on here, and accounts for 50% of the smiths i know about anywhere close. The gunsmith i'm trying to reach says they charge $25 for a transfer, has good reviews. I was planning on requesting just a dab of silver solder on it. Seems like it would cost less $ and be fully reversible. I mean, how much could it possibly cost to dab it with solder, and how hard could it be? Does it really matter if i silver solder it rather than pin it? Thanks again.
 
I dont think there's any specific requirement for making the muzzle break "permanent".

Atilla pointed out that it wasnt acceptable to the 1994 ban standards. But like he said it's iffy and noones has been charged for it. But from what i can tell tons of people are doing it without trouble.

How can anyone charge $100 for a transfer? Maybe they said that so you wouldn't do it, and they could sell you an AK they have in stock....

Any chance you could PM me the dealer who was actually willing to do this? Probably looks sketchy because I just went green today haha but I've been asking around and my two go two FFL's aren't willing to do it :/

I'm also Eastern MA, SouthEastern to be exact. That's why I ask.

I didn't go to a dealer. You need to find a gunsmith because the AK needs modifying to become mass legal, it needs to have the muzzle break welded. A gunsmith as far as i know has to have an FFL, so they can transfer it to you too.

Oh, whoops. Somewhere along the line of this thread I thought you were Eastern MA. I'm just afraid that I'll find the right guy and then go to place my order and see the dreaded "Out of Stock." The guy I was talking to said he wouldn't do it regardless of his gunsmith welding it up, because having it shipped to him while being not in MA compliance would red flag him. WTF

Yea i dont know about that red flag... i think a FFL and a C&R can order whatever the hell they want... anyways, if youre talking to a dealer i'd imagine its just not worth their time and trouble to be the middle man and make not much in a transfer fee, saying theyd be red flagged is probably better for customer relations than saying its not worth their time... I'd find a gunsmith and talk to them directly....

and there are 153 left in stock the website says.... i've been checking it since i placed my order and when i first started looking at it a few days ago it was at 168 or something... so you have some time...
