for Somerville
12/20 passed safety course
12/21 called to schedule appointment at police dept for 12/31
12/31 dropped off application, photos and fingerprints taken
1/24 got the call that license was ready
1/25 picked up Class A restricted License but from the research i did first timers always get restricted it gets removed when renewing

Congrats !

Very quick.

But do you really have to wait SIX YEARS ?

1.5 weeks later meaning, after your interviews? Even at the best of times it takes longer than that in MA.

In Salem the LO sent everything to the State electronically during my Interview.

The FRB had activated, printed, and mailed my LTC one week later.

Then the Salem PD had to do Background checks. All it all it took 40 days from my Interview.

From what I'm been reading on this thread, the worst delays happen when your Local PD takes its time even contacting the FRB.

From Wikipedia (yeah, I know - Wikipedia):

Additionally, LTC-A permits may have the following restrictions:

  • Sporting: restricts possession to the purpose of lawful recreational shooting or competition; for use in the lawful pursuit of game animals and birds; for personal protection in the home; for the purpose of collecting (other than machine guns); and for outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, camping, cross country skiing, or similar activities. Includes travel to and from activity location.

I suspect very few PD's want to issue a whole menu of Licenses, but instead have two or three types they issue, and none other.

Hmm. I had thought that the state (and/or fed) was the one doing the background checks?

A 40-day turnaround is fair, whatever the outcome. That is the legal requirement.

I have no complaints with Salem.

Others that are experiencing long delays - you have a genuine gripe - it is illegal.

As a Salem resident, I implore any City Departemnt to avoid Lawsuits. I do not need my Property Taxes to increase as a result of incompetence.

So far, the Salem PD has been a model of efficiency.

And no, I don't work for them !

Good for Salem for doing their jobs.

I disagree with 40 days being fair, though. Yes it's the law but the law is stupid. What is someone supposed to do that has a credible threat to their life, and they don't yet own a gun? Hope that their stalker or whatnot waits 40 days?

Finally!!! Well, it from October 12th to January 23rd, but I finally got my LTC, with no restrictions (Hudson). I picked up my license first thing Saturday morning, picked up a couple of licensed friends, and we went straight the show in Marlborough, where I bought a Glock 23 .40.

40 day update in Chicopee

FRB told me they received the application yesterday, and its pending activation by them. Looks like Chicopee uses the entire 40 days to approve or deny

Likely more than that RandomBS. Chicopee is 60 day min 95 day max. I know a couple dozen Chicopee permit holders. Last year 90 days on the dot was the norm, I'm now hearing 60 days is the new norm. Keep us posted on your experience. Also, try and come to one of our Pioneer Vally meet ups. Details in the off topic section.

The 40 Day Standard is NOT FINE. But considering how screwed up MA is, it's reasonable.

What we NEED now is a Standard for MA PD's and how they schedule INTERVIEWS.

You see, Police are as clever as anyone. If there's a requirement for a 40 Day turnaround from the Interview/Application, just schedule the Interview for SIX MONTHS away !

It's just me, but I don't mind the 30 Day delay I was subjected to in Salem. It SHOULD be much quicker, but if every potential Applicant in MA was looking at a 30 Day wait, most would be more than pleased.

Yeah, that's what Salem did to me. 40 Days.

I don't have a problem, personally, with that. They followed the LAW. And as such they have my RESPECT.

Worth adding here that Chicopee does same day interviews, they dont schedule interview appointments. You call early that day and they have you come in the same day to come and do the interview and fingerprinting. There's a limited number of spots and they fill up quickly each day, but if you call early it should only take a couple of tries to get in. Also, they dont even accept paper applications, you dont have to fill in an application at all, they fill it out for you while doing the interview. So even though my approval took 40 days, it was only 40 days from the point I decided I wanted to apply, I didn't have to wait for any bullshit appointment 6 months down the line. I don't know of any other town that does it this way, but does seem like somewhat of an improvement.

Heard from my brothers recently, both received initial Class As in Springfield and West Springfield, respectively.

Called Agawam PD today to find out about appointments, was told to come in any day between two 3-hour windows with my paperwork and $100, no appointment necessary. This bodes well. Will be dropping it off within a couple of weeks (expires in July)

My wife received her LTC A today

City = Chicopee (Still RED as ever)
Total wait time = 68 days
Restrictions = Sporting
Chief = Charette
Interviewer = Gagne
Requirements beyond state requirements = 0

SPORTING
– restricts possession to the purpose of lawful recreational shooting or competition; for use in the lawful pursuit of game animals and birds; for personal protection in the home; for the purpose of collecting (other than machine guns); and for outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, camping, cross country skiing, or similar activities. Includes travel to and from activity location.

I sure would not want to be the Test Case were I caught carrying while Hiking or Camping. Is WALKING something like HIKING ?

FYI, unless that definition was supplied directly by Chicopee, it is non-applicable.

Does anyone know how strict East Boston would be to get a Class A LTC? It's not on the list but I'm assuming it would be difficult considering Chelsea is RED and it's our neighboring city. Should I even try or should I move somewhere before I apply? Thanks guys for any help.

East Boston is still Boston. You can get an LTC A but it will be restricted unless you have some special condition (e.g., business owner that deals with large amounts of cash).

You would apply through the BPD headquarters, not A7. You will get a LTC class A restricted unless you meet certain requirements.
