Guide to gun rights in your Massachusetts town

Is it wrong that I feel...almost excited, at the prospect of suing the place I live for my rights?

If you do decide to bring them to court, please connect with Comm2A first. The worst that can happen is you bring up suit, lose, and it sets a negative precedent for all of us in MA.

I'm all for you suing Medford PD but definitely, definitely do NOT do it without comm2a.

Bringing a new right-to-carry lawsuit before our active projects targeting Winchester, Boston, and Brookline have run their full course would probably not be productive. Additionally, it appears that Medford will lift restrictions upon renew - something that the other defendants do not do. That makes it a very different case.

Of course I will reach out to them when the time comes. The person who conducted the firearms safety course essentially promised that regardless of my town, I would be able to get an unrestricted the first time, so I'm talking with them first. I don't want to bother Comm2A until I actually receive the license and it actually lists a restriction.

I've lived in MA for 2 years. I understand things are different here. However, the Medford officer said that it being my first time having a permit would be the reason for the restriction. I'm unaware where in the constitution it mentions either town lines or previous permits issued as a basis for rights restriction, but I'll keep looking. [wink]

Talking to the guy who did your course isnt going to do you any good. I wouldnt bother.

As Rob likes to say, in Massachusetts the Constitution is void where prohibited by law. This is sadly one of those cases. Welcome to the socialist utopia comrade. At least they're willing to issue you one, though. Your best bet, as others have said, is to just wait it out.

The person who did your course is likely just a waste of time. Unless it somehow happened to be your town's Chief of Police, you're out of luck and there's nothing they can do.

Curious who conducted your course. If it was in Medford, then I have an idea who it was.

This isn't just about me. This is about everyone who lives in the birthplace of our endowed nation whose rights are infringed upon by the "arbiter" of the 2nd Amendment, a town's police chief. As God-Emperor would say...

I'll be relatively candid here. The course was at a gun store in Middleton. The man conducting the course alluded to being a former police officer in Danvers.

I'm from Ohio, so this whole pony show baloney of "obeying" and "sucking up" just won't do.

Not sure if you know, but historically Medford PD has some issues.

Heh, there's several banks within walking distance of my place in Medford. I wonder if any of them were the one he hit.

Though the more I've learned about MA politics, the less this sort of thing surprises me.

The bank is now Salvatore's Restaurant on High St.

You're certainly not the first to bring up the problems here, and won't be the last. There is nothing shocking to what you say, we all feel the pinch too.

Yeah, the course instructor being a former police officer has zero bearing unless he worked for Medford before retiring and they liked him AND he puts in a good word. But from elsewhere? Sorry, like I said, won't help.

WESTFORD.

Heads up, when you go to renew, you will need your safety class certificate, even if you already have an unrestricted LTC.

I'm assuming the chief turned into a c*nt and might make it harder for new applications.

Here is my story: https://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/threads/331871-LTC-Renewal-in-Westford

Licensing officer: She is awesome, very friendly, very nice, tries to accommodate everyone. So don't take it out on her when she gives you the shitty news.

Marblehead:
Picked up application 2/14
Interview: 2/16
FRB Approval: Mar 28

Told it will be printed and mailed by 30th.
LO told me at time of application they are made available for pick-up immediately upon PD receipt, will update when in hand.

And it's finally in hand today, almost 8 weeks to the day of interview.
No restrictions and overall a painless, if somewhat overextended, process.

Wife and I moved to Florida MA recently. Florida has a licensing officer who is available Wednesday evenings at the North Adams Police Dept.Very nice and helpful, we were notifying him of change of residence. Since Florida only has 750 or so residents spread sparsely,I think it is safe to assume town is Green like North Adams who supplies most of our services.

Had my renewal apt in Haverhill today with det corthell. Same as always with him......easy peesy. He's great to deal with. I'm way ahead of schedule as mine expires in October but he will take you early. The apt was only 10 days after I called him.....so not backed up too bad there. I have my receipt signed by him so all seemed fine.

Haverhill.....still green as can be.

Anyone have any familiarity w/ LTC renewals in Revere?

Specifically, whether the reference letters OR the references section on the state application is required for renewals? Can't tell from their site.

Cheers

yes, on the state form it is required. as for any letters being required for renewal, Id call Revere PD to ask.

I assume you mean the references are required by Revere, to the state they are optional (I believe it even says that on the form). And letters would similarly be required by Revere. There is no requirement for either under MGL. Of course, if you don't submit them you will be denied as unsuitable.

Massachusetts, where you must kiss the ring of the CoP if he so chooses.

Thanks guys! Figured I'd run it by the folks here in case anyone knew off the top of their heads but will try to get clarification from the licensing officer.

A friend and his wife just got their LTC-A's in Danvers in 5 weeks from interview date.
1st time applicants.

It actually says to provide two references "as required by your licensing authority" so if they want you to put something there, do so. If they ask for actual letters of reference, well, it's up to you whether you want to push back or not and run the risk of being told they won't process your application without them. So it's not really "required by Revere, to the state they are optional". The state doesn't call your references, your licensing authority would. The state leaves it up to the PD whether they ask for them or not. As for requirement under MGL, I'd like to see what MGL says about what form you just use to apply. Does it specify? If so, then whatever is on it can be asked for. If not, well they still leave the catch all that everyone hates.......

Danvers should probably be switched to Green. They were bad for a while but in recent years things seem to have changed. I know multiple first timers who have gotten unrestricted licenses in Danvers in without issue.

my gf and I both applied for an unrestricted in boxborough both were approved. The Sargents we worked with both made the process painless. Process was 6 weeks total
