Guide to gun rights in your Massachusetts town

Hudson update - still red.

One of the guys at work that I took shooting got his LTC-A this week with sporting/hunting restrictions on it. Hudson never bothered to notify him that it was in. When he did call to follow up on it he was told "Oh, it's been here for weeks." Nice...

Sorry I posted, but I agree with the Chief. If I was in his shoes, I would not just hand out a Class A CCW permit to just anyone.
And yet, so many other states don't have problems with this...

I know that the folks here on NES are responsible gun owners, but you have to admit, even thou someone passes an approved safety course and background check, some folks shouldn't have a screw driver in their hands let alone a firearm.
That would because there IS no Constitutional right to bear screwdrivers. [wink] Sorry, I couldn't resist that one; it was too easy.

That's a shame... I have a couple of friends who are ready (finally) to go get their LTCs - unfortunately, they live in Hudson. My advice to them was to contact Darius or Keith FIRST.

And if you aren't "elligable," you're not. Wow, what a policy!

Doc Daneeka and Yossarian would understand it completely. [rolleyes]
Assumption made that "eligible" is as what state and federal law defines. Given the nature of the licensing in MA it sounds perfectly reasonable to me to inquire as to exactly how Swansea defines "eligible". For example, even Winchendon will approve "no restrictions" if one is eligible, it's just that "eligible" is defined very differently from state and federal law (i.e. needed for job).

exactly in accordance with the state and federal definitions of eligible

Do you mean they do restricted the first time around and then remove those restrictions after two years?

It was a bit sarcastic. It took that long for them to finally call and set up an interview, etc. I never had any of my calls returned and every time i walked in face to face they said I had to call. Finally I got lucky one day and caught the firearms officer right in front of me and he offered to do it on the spot if i had my paperwork. They push hard for you to get an FID or LTCB, but so long as you use the all lawful purposes you get a class A unrestricted no problem. Mine is unrestricted.

Could be that I am pulling an all nighter, but that doesn't make sense to me

1. You walk in there and say you want to apply for an LTC
2, They hand you a stapled form and say you need to call the number on the front page to set up an appointment.
3. You call the number for the "firearms office" which obviously doesn't exist because my town is too small and therefore no one ever answers the phone.
4. You leave a message, name, date, time, phone number, and you wait.
5. Wait more...months because you don't want to look like a pest.
6. No one ever calls back, repeat process, wait more
7. Finally you get tired after about 9 months of waiting, walk in the door, ask to speak to the firearms officer because you have a question.
8. Tell him you've been trying to schedule an interview but you don't think your voicemails are going through.
9. He either sets up the appointment or does it on the spot because you put him on the spot
10. Not the nicest way to get it done, but it worked despite the firearms officer trying push you toward FID or Class B
11. 1-2 months later Class A LTC with no restrictions

Better?

So they will B-ram you if you have no spine. That's nice of them *rolls eyes*

I came in here from info on North Reading and I must say, this is discouraging. Here is my situation. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to figure out where I should apply for my permit. I'm going for a Class A - Protection of Life permit. I own a house in North Reading and have lived there since May 2006. However, my license and my car are registered in Stoneham which is my hometown. I use my grandparents address bcs I wanted Stoneham residency when I took the Firefighter exam. Now I'm wondering if I should apply for my permit in Stoneham or North Reading?

Sounds like you need to apply in stoneham? If you apply in north reading and say you want a "protection of life" permit your going to have a bit of a struggle. Go with the "for all lawful purposes" which includes protection of life for you and your family, self defense, target shooting, high capacity blah blah. North Reading recently got a new firearms officer so things might have changed. Go take th class and head down there with your certificate and see what they say.

uhhh, I just noticed something while looking at the list; what about Gardner? I'm pretty sure someone knows how hard it is to get an LTC there. There's a shop there (Match Shot Firearms), so there's got to be LTC holders in Gardner.

Thanks for the reply. I took the class last night and have my certificate. Now I'm stuck bcs I dont know whether I should go through Stoneham or North Reading.

Greenfield lives up to it's name. Got my LTC-A unrestricted in August. I was treated with the utmost respect and everything went very smoothly with no delays. The lieutenant who issues licenses in Greenfield seems to be a decent guy.[grin]

I'm guessing if you are a homeowner in North Reading, you pay taxes, etc, you can register in North Reading. The only way to find out is to go to the police station and find out. From what I can see the new firearms officer is significantly better than the old one, as it was the new one who finally was able to help me get mine. Like I said before though, you're going to have to be persistant if you want the Class A unrestricted, especially if you are younger.

My guess is that North Reading will not accept your application without showing some proof of residency in North Reading. My guess they will ask for a drivers license. Don't know whether they'll take something else and what.

The LTC application form asks for a drivers license number and the instructions admonish the licensing authority to ensure the identity of the applicant. Maybe North Reading will accept an "I've just moved" story", but I'm not sure I'd bet on it. They could easily tell you to come back when you've got your license switched.

IANAL but my recommendation is that that you need to go to Stoneham.

Picked up my LTC-A (T&H) today in Salem.

The Lt. said that the number of applicants has increased significantly.

Salem has been black, so did you have some hi-caps before you moved in, an A before you moved in, or just got an A because you asked?
