Guide to gun rights in your Massachusetts town

If they require a range test then they darn well better issue no restrictions.

Also if you can't buy a handgun without the license, go out and practice with it; how can they expect you to pass a shooting test.

In most states that require shooting tests (for carry permit) you can buy a handgun without a license.

Just venting.

I have lived in both Provincetown and Wellfleet over the last ten years and my experiences (and experiences of my peers) in both towns is that they are generally green.

I've had some discussions with the Chief in Welllfleet and my impression is that Rich is a good guy that follows the laws on license issuance. I think he's actually a "gun guy". If I ever find myself in his neck of the woods, I really would like to meet him in person.

He is a gun guy. . . and frequent poster on another gun board

BROCKTON - just an update on Brockton.

They now have a notice in the waiting area that all new apps will be restricted, however, after 2 years, anyone may request to have the restrictions lifted. Speaking with the Officer, she said that unless there are any problems, they pretty much lift them for everyone.... Not enough to make them Green, but maybe black with a greenish tint? It's still brockton though

That just makes them "Ketchup with some mustard".

One question is, will Brockton downgrade on a move-in renewal or not? That's kind of the real sign. If they do, I'd still consider them pure flaming red.

Quincy

After talking with the Captain's assistant I was told that you will receive a LTC ALP after your 25th Birthday. I can confirm. I moved here in August of 2009 when I was 24. I sent a polite letter asking to have my restrictions removed in April of 2010 after turning 25. Within 45 minutes of me dropping the letter off at the station I was called and told my restrictions were being lifted and to await for a new card to be sent.

So you can join the service, Defend and Serve your country, Protect other in foreign lands, serve 4 years, come home and still not have the same rights you fought for. . . .that sounds right[rolleyes]

After reading this for however long, it is just crazy to see people assigning green/black versus red/yellow to a town for its policy. It should be good/bad or better yet; this thread should not exist at all. This is just plain ridiculous.

You're seriously complaining about the colors used to represent good vs bad? I thought I had seen everything here on NES, but I guess not.

WTF JasonS? You missed what I was saying completely. To think it would be taken that way makes it all the more looney.

This state's gun laws are ridiculous- this thread is one way for its inhabitants to cope with them. If you don't like the thread, don't read it..

Guys, based on every one of Coyote33's posts that I've ever read, I'm going to go out on a very short limb and assume that he's upset that a thread like this is even required. While I think the color code system is the best that we can really hope for right now, he's right that it doesn't tell you what you need to know.

What it comes down to is that in the greenest, reddest or blackest town in the state, the only thing that's for sure is that you own handguns & large cap long guns at the pleasure of your local chief, who will do whatever he wants with the license.

So far nothing.

Its going on five weeks and I haven't heard anything. Though I suppose no news is better than bad news. Going down there tomorrow to see whats going on.

In a casual conversation with one of Worcesters finest I asked what the likelihood of getting an LTC/ALP in Worcester would be. The response I got was "You probably want to move outside Worcester, it will greatly increase your chances." So I moved to Quincy and put in for my LTC this past friday! Now its just a wait and see.

Brewster will not issue "all lawful purposes" to fist time applicants unless they are in a career which warrants such. "Target & hunting" is what is generally issued for first time applicants.

Randolph is getting a new chief starting July 1, 2010. Lt. Pace has been appointed to the chief's job and it looks like a new licensing officer is listed on the town's website.

Taunton is still a green city. 4 weeks from fingerprinting to my card arriving in the mail. Class a no restrictions.
Detective Smith was very professional and friendly and made the interview process painless.

Hudson gives Class A ALP

I just had one of my students in my NRA Basic Pistol class get his Class A ALP in Hudson, first time through the process. Maybe it's because he is mid to late 30s, looks mature and responsible. I don't know if it matters that I'm from Hudson too. It should be green in my book. It might be useful if someone who got less that that lately chimes in with their age.

That's the first I've heard of this from Hudson.

as far as i know, they only restrict your first two years to new LTCs. I know a couple people that have moved TO brockton and did not get downgraded. And they will give business owners un restrict first time out too.

so not totally green... but in honesty... better then it used to be.

melrose is green got my unrestricted ltc in 3 weeks all they did was take pics and prints and background check and thats it.

CORRECTION - My apologies to the group for misinformation. I double-checked and it was my student who lives in Marlboro who got an unrestricted Class A LTC. The Hudson student got a restricted Class A, and was told he could petition for having the restriction lifted in a year or 2. So Hudson hasn't changed from the chart listed here
