Harvard sportsman club

The practice is a great way to get an intro to USPSA and meet some club members. It's much lower stress and there's less going on than at a match, and people are always willing to teach a newbie.

Another good way to meet folks is at the monthly breakfasts which go on during the fall/winter. $6 all-you-can-eat buffet with all sorts of tasty stuff, and open to the public so anyone can come down and meet some club members. It just so happens that the next breakfast is this Sunday, so if weeknights are tough you should consider coming down on Sunday morning.

I won't be able to make it this Sunday. I will have to watch for the next one. Good to bring guns for some post pig out shooting?

You'll need to find someone to take you to the range as a guest - only club members and their guests can shoot. There's usually a good number of people who are there to eat then shoot, so if you introduce yourself around I'm sure you'll find someone willing to host you.

Also, the next breakfast is December 8th.

I usually go to the club on Sunday at 0900 to maybe 1130 +. If someone is near and wants to check out the club, let me know ahead of time and we might be able to make arrangements.

Breakfasts work well also. If you are green and post in the members section asking if someone is a Harvard member and can show you around you usually end up with someone working on the same schedule you are on.

Was at the club this morning first time attending breakfast wow what a selection. Food was great and an incredible deal. Great turn out of people. Hit up the range after for some shooting. It was cold but fun as always. Great range great time.

I just got back from HSC. I was at the 100yd range, just killing some paper and turned around to see a Mass SP cruiser go by slowly. Anyone know if something was going on?

The gate was open so maybe he just decided to take a tour.

We have several State Troopers who are very active members. If they stop at the club on their way to or from work, they are likely to be in a cruiser.

Probably me stopping in for some quick target fun on the way home from work. Sorry for any alarm. Firefighters get all the love when they go anywhere, we get "Oh crap!"

Heh.

Not quite "Oh crap" but a moment of "what the...". I'll know what's what next time.

It's not like California where the police are trolling the ranges looking for AWB and other violations. Don't be so concerned.

Fair enough. Part of the reaction on my part was seeing the cruiser. I assumed the cruiser meant he was on duty.

I've talked to off duty cops at HSC and they were all cool.

Staties all get their own, personal, take-home cruiser. I've seen staties at HSC several times. They always give me a friendly wave as we pass on the driveway.

Harvard Sportsmen's Club

I think of HSC...as my extended family (1860! Members)

So some family members bring to the club, their "company vehicle". That okay... They have nice "toys"

JLB

pmclaine, "Firefighters get all the love" because usually when people see us, it's because they called for help but when they see you, it's usually because you just caught them doing something they shouldn't have been doing.

Technically you are correct. If we are in the cruiser we are on duty but pay stops at the end of my shift. So after leaving the 300 yard range yesterday the crash I came across in Concord and worked was on my time not the tax payers.

Still as a taxpayer the car is yours. I wouldnt take your car to Pelham, Reading or some place out of the way in order to shoot. Harvard is in my patrol area and we could use more practice not less so Ill hope you understand. The ammo is bought by me, the M&P is yours. Thanks for letting me use it...and before you ask Im sorry you cant borrow it.

But can I borrow the cruiser?[smile]

That all makes sense. I've seen troopers brining the cruiser home and forgot about that.

If you see my car (the Subaru) there, stop by and say hello next time.

Well said! I think I'd like to meet the apparently rare Statie with a sense of humor!

Let me know the next time you are headed to Harvard and I'll share my ammo with you. :)

If I don't have family stuff to do right after work I usually drop in Sat and Sun after 3:00 and spend time on the 200 or 300 steel. I like .308 with 168 grain SMKs and .223 in the 77 grain variety but seeing as its free ammo I wont be too particular. :|

Hi guys,

Was looking into HSC and was wondering what the 'crowds' are like on weekends (which pretty much only time I would go given it's a little bit of a drive if I were to join). Is this club mobbed on weekends, or are there sufficient stations/ranges to accommodate everyone most times?

You will always find range with an open spot. I've never seen it with what I would call crowded conditions, save for a few special events.

If you want to go on the weekend, go in the morning if you can. That's when I shoot and it's usually almost empty. There are exceptions like when there's a match going on or it's breakfast Sunday but in general, mornings are pretty quiet compared to afternoons

Obviously on a beautiful Saturday afternoon there will be other people shooting, especially on the more popular ranges like the 25/50. I have never seen the range be so crowded that there were no open spaces to shoot. Some people, for whatever reason, don't like shooting when there's more than a couple other people on the line. If you're one of those people, then you may find that the range is "too crowded" on the weekends. Gerry's point about it being less crowded in the morning is also true, so if you're an early riser you can usually get some time with the range nearly to yourself.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't mind company, just not into waiting for a lane/station if I can avoid it. I'm at MRA now, and last couple times I've been there on weekends there it has been very crowded (a wait for a lane last trip). I'd like to keep membership there just for Loeb range (really can't beat 24/7 access that accommodates handgun and centerfire rifle), but other than that, looking for a nice outdoor club.

What's the best way to get sponsored at HSC? I have heard about Wednesday night meetings for ISPC or something of that nature, but unfortunately due to work schedule, it is tough for me to get there at that particular time. Are there any weekend functions, meetings, etc. that I could attend to meet someone?

Thanks for any info.
