I may have to breakdown and buy an M&Pc....

Well you answered your own question there, if you allready own the M&P 40 fullsize just get the compact. The mags from the FS will work in the compact with the XGRIP sleeve -XGRIP-for-S&W-M&Pc-and-other-guns.

Nah, I don't have an M&P 40...I have a G22. If I already had an M&P, I wouldn't have wasted people's time by asking about getting a compact.
For caliber reciprocity, I'm probably gonna go with the .40

I know alot of people suggest try before you buy, but I believe I am gonna camp outside of FS on sat morning and go straight for the paperwork.

If I can't figure out a way to effectively use/shoot this gun, then there is a problem with me that I'll just have to work on. I understand some guns just "fit" better, and some people shoot certain guns more accurately than others, but I'm not gonna use either of those as reasons not to buy a gun that is as established as the m&p's.
Same reason why I won't hesitate to buy a Sig when I feel like it. Most quality pistols are inherently accurate/reliable, so there is no reason not to own atleast one of each.

I'm not 100% on this, but I do think that you can buy an aftermarket 9mm bbl and use 9mm mags to get a "2-in-1" gun out of an M&P 40c just like you can with Glocks.

I know that 9mm mags will fit the .40 and bbls are made. I'm just not 100% that nothing else needs changing (e.g. extractor) w/o further research. There is an M&P forum that probably has that info.

I have a Storm Lake 40 to 9m barrel , so far no issues , ( M&P Full Size ) just have to buy the 9MM mags. Really only use it to practice but 500 rounds later no problems.

Handled the m&p40c today and it fit (with only the standard grip on it) who knows if I would actually prefer one of the other grip sizes [grin]

As for the trigger....wow that was bad![laugh] I've understood for a long time that a trigger job would be necessary on whatever one I got.

Overall, with the tax-free weekend looming close...I think I'm gonna have to pick one up no matter what.

The only question: 9 or .40

I'd almost consider the 9 because it would be better shooting in that small of a platform. However, I already own a .40 and would like as big a caliber in that gun as possible.

Four Seasons is doing a great online deal: $465 for any M&P(excluding .45) BEFORE your choice of $50 rebate or 2 extra mags from S&W.

[pot]

Go with the .40c. My first handgun purchase was the M&P 9c and I loved it, but ending up selling it so I could buy the .40c instead and have been very happy ever since. I also picked up the .357 sig barrel directly from S&W for around $89.99, the magazines between both calibers are the same so no need to buy spares. If you go with the 9 you can always buy a conversion to .40 but it's not a drop-in replacement and will require you to buy separate magazines. I love this gun, both in .40 and .357 and think you'll be happy with it as well.

Oh sorry I must have miss read it.

Ya I was going to go to FS but with my back and Deb's medical problems it's to long of a drive.

I'm going over to S&W SC on Saturday morning to get a 40 compact. they sell the gun for $490 if you buy the CT laser at the same time so for the few dollars difference I'll just drive 25 miniutes instead of 2 1/2 hours.

Buy a 357 sig barrell also and you have a "3-in-1" gun. The nice thing with the 357 sig is you use the 40 mags as they are the same.

Ask FS if you can pay 75% of the gun and do the paper work today. That way all you have to do is ick up the gun and pay the remaining 25% of the gun. I would think they rather do it this way since it's a sale for sure. I already pretty much paid for my Sig 239 and paper work has been down, so All i need to do is give my FFL $20.00 on Sat and go home.

Just rented the 9c at AFS yesterday. I liked it a lot and think it's a very good gun. I also shot their G26 and was less than happy with it. Probably look into getting a 9c at some point.

I couldn't take it....I held off as long as I could....

Went to FS straight from work this morning after I found out they didn't have a route for me. (aww shucks....really wanted to work on a FRIDAY![laugh])
Talked with the most bearded Jeff, and he informed me about the extensive wait that will be going on tomorrow.

SO.....I cut him a check dated for tomorrow and will have to go sometime next week to pick that little BUGger up! Selected the 40c and as Jeff was filling out the receipt for me I immediately started fiddling with the backstraps.

Handling-wise, all 3 grips fit my hand. I'm gonna have to do some shootin to see which one feels best.

Once I got home, I immediately ordered a horse-hide Super-Tuck (in the comments section of orderform, I said "I wish I could've gotten in on the NES Groupbuy!), but can't for the life of me find a tape measure so I can yell at The Beltman to make meez a belt!

Did you get the SKU without the mag safety? No worries if you did, you can always get it removed later when you get the trigger done.

-Mike

I have the receipt.....let me do a little research on SW site. Guessing the prefix will voila it for me.

Sucks....didn't even think about it when I paid. Another thing: forgot they also have thumb-safeties too. Not on mine, but would've hemmed and hawwed on whether the extra level of security in a gun-grab would be worth it.

EDIT: Hmm.... I am wrong to assume serial number and SKU are same thing! All I have is serial number so I will try to look that up

Well, the easy way to tell is... did it have CAUTION - WILL FIRE WITH THE MAGAZINE REMOVED or similar laser etched on the slide?

If the answer is no, then it has a mag safety. (One upshot of removing it after you get it, of course, is you don't have all that crap written on your slide!)

-Mike

The thumb safety on M&Ps is useless. I paid extra for that on my M&P 45 and it will change position almost by looking at it the wrong way. It's nothing like a 1911 safety, that's for sure.

I wonder if it can be removed and the hole plugged?

-Mike

I can honestly say that I have no idea what the right side of the slide looks like.

I was too busy checking out the sights, grip, internals, backstraps, etc.....it could have said 10 millionth customer!!! And I would not have known it.

I'm just psyched beyond all get out!

Screw waiting til sometime next week to pickup, I'm gonna bring those hardworkin boys DD and and get in-line around 8'ish!

S&W's site is only showing the MA Compliant gun with a mag safety, (SKU 109253). The other one that has no mag safety isn't a MA Compliant gun (SKU 109303), theres another one but I'm not sure how that one is set up as it doesn't say on the S&W site (SKU 109003).

Is there some other compact that I'm not seeing that is MA Compliant that doesn't have the mag safety ???

I'm only seeing the fullsize gun as MA Compliant with no mag safety (SKU 109350) and MA Compliant with mag safety (SKU 109250).

That sucks now to, when I bought my fullsize the only way you could get the MA Complaint gun was with the mag safety, now I see they make it both ways.

It might be a typeo but I'm seeing the MA guns listed on S&W's site with 6.5 Lb triggers not the 10 Lb triggers I thought they were suppose to have.

Answer soon if you are on now as I'm going this morning to pick one up and I would rather not have the mag safety.

David,

I don't know which caliber you are looking for, but the only list that matters is this one:

http://www.mass.gov/Eeops/docs/chsb/firearms/approved_firearms_roster.pdf

Go to pages as follows:

- 9mm is on page 7
- 40 is on page 8
- 45 is on page 9

I see some models with safety, some not specified. It's up to the dealer to figure this out. If you buy at S&W, oh well.

Ya I'm getting the 40 compact and I only see the one listed with the mag safety there, there are three fullsize guns listed (and two of those are mag safety guns) so S&W's website is correct, there is only one 40c and it's the one with the mag safety.

Ya I'm going to pick it up at S&W Shooting Center as they have it for $490 if you buy the CT at the same time. So for the short difference in price and with my back and Deb's medical problems a 25 minuite ride is a lot better then a 2 1/2 hour ride to FS's. If it was a big difference I would have gone to FS to give him the sale.

Thanks Again.

The gun is mine now.

Went to FS against better judgement this morning and after a 2:15 wait...it was finally mine.

DOES have magazine disconnect (boo), but oh well. Not too big a deal to me.

Took it home, field-strip cleaned it, and was puzzled by the yellow paint/junk on the recoil spring. Started to try cleaning it off, then looked in manual. Nothing mentioned about it. I stopped trying to get it off and re-assembled.

Don't think I will be able to shoot it today, but should I try to get that crap off?

It's not crap, it is paint. They are color-coded for the poundage (e.g. 9mm and 40 may look alike but springs are most likely different weights). Leave it as is and you'll be better off.

It certainly looked like paint/spray paint. I've just never owned a new enough pistol to have it.

Overall, I'm smart enough to know that it wouldn't hurt anything or the operation of the gun. It was more of an aesthetic thing. I knew that I was gonna have glaring yellow flakes in my slide and on barrel giving the appearance of an unclean gun.

After I realized it wasn't gonna come off easy, I consulted manual. They said nothing, so I figured no biggie.

And now that you mention it, the Glockstore magazine that gets sent to me in the mail has like 6 different colored springs/weights for various models.

I am issued a 40 FS and a 40c at work. Mine have the standdard 6.5lb triggers. The standard triggers are ok at best, much better then the 10lb crap that comes on the guns being sold in the retail market (In Mass). The guns are reliable and feel great in hand. I think they are great carry, duty or fun gun. Personally I would never carry a gun for self defense that has had a trigger job that involves altering of a factory part. My opinion is this gives a lawyer a window to character assasinate you-make you look like a Rambo. Mr so and so felt he knew more then the factory that built the gun so he modified the gun bla bla bla . I have no issue with the replacement of factory parts for Factory Parts, provided the factory parts are specific to a carry/self defense gun and not a competition gun. You can bet your backside if you shoot in self defense there will be a civil law suit. In the civil forum all you have to show is that the other party was at least 51% negligent. In this state with the sheeple you get on juries the odds are not in your favor. I know that the last shootings at my agency the guns were subjected to a full inspection by the Da and in the subsequent civil trial the descedants lawyer also had the weapons inspected to ensure they were within factory spec and contained factory parts. As soon as a factory part is changed its up to you to defend this modification. Granted you could argue your modification made the gun easier to shoot acurately and thus more safe to bystanders as well as yourself but it would be your nickle funding this argument. Using stock factory parts you at least would have the manufacturer that would have to back why they manufacture a gun with 6.5lb trigger etc. YMMV
