Just got a nee job with a significant pay raise and so to celebrate I'm thinkin it's a good excuse for a new gun. I was thinking a 10/22, then I was thinkin a tactical shotgun, but now I'm leaning towards a revolver as I don't own one. I saw a S&W model 36 for abou $350 that I've got my eye on, bu I was gonna hold off until after the marlborough gun show in april to see if I find anything I fancy/better deals there. Any suggestions from people who are more familiar with the vendors there on who I should check with and what their siggestion is as far as what revolver to get? Would prefer something that can handle .357 but it isn't required. Lookin to spend under $400 and I'm fine with used rather than new.

I was going to say a S&W 686 but under $400 ain't happening. For about $450 you could find a used SP101 though.

Second the sp101 and gp100. I have two of each, short and long barrel! Can't go wrong..

For a range gun see $400 look around for a ruger security 6 in 357. That is if the gp100 is out of your price range.

Probably just for fun at the range. If I found a smaller j frame I might carry it as a bug iinfrequently but mostly it would just be for the range

Save a little more money and as a couple other people have said, buy a Ruger GP100. They're really solid guns, nice actions. I've got a S/S with a 6" barrel and a red-dot I use for pins, .38 for medium bore, .357 for big bore, and it's just a really great revolver. You can find them used, you can get them in different finishes, different barrel lengths.

i have a 36 with Houge grips. Not a bad gun but it is not rated for 357

I like Ruger. The .44 Alaskan mag will put a smile on your face [smile]. The sp101 in .357 is about 20 years old and goes bang every time. Great guns.

Ive learned that its better to save for a little longer and get what you want than get what you can afford now, I have shifted my collecting from quantity to quality.

i'd go with the GP 100 3", sweet revolver but op, your budget is kinda small, ya think? maybe you could put your money aside and save a few bucks more. $400? you're almost there bud, stash 20 bucks a week away and in a couple of months....you are there.

the only j frame that might be ok as a plinker once in a while would be a three inch, other than this, consider them self defense guns. the rugers will give you good value and are solidly built.

The Ruger Security Six is an excellent revolver. I can't even remember how long I've had mine but it goes to the range every trip and is my choice for in-home protection. It easy to shoot and it's as solid as the day I got it. An older gun for sure but Ruger made them to last.

+1 scoop it up if you come across a security six.

Unless you can find an older S&W, you might want to ask yourself if you want a S&W with an internal lock or a Ruger without an internal lock. For me it would be an easy choice.
