My wife's Christensen ca5five6 ar has a carbon barrel and a custom handguard. The barrel is larger in diameter than regular barrel options, so I think I would need their proprietary adjustable gas block if I want to control the back flow pressure without changing springs or buffer weights. I've reached out to christiensen three times and they never responded. So at this point I'm kind of done with them and have no desire to give them more of my money.

My question to you guys is how do I go about determining which buffer weight or spring to go with, and which is preferred weight or spring? Or is it both? Thx Pete

P.s. 16inch barrel. Getting a nomad ti xc. Shooting mostly hand loads.

If it's a gas issue, you could try bootlegs adjustable bcg system that may reduce it.

Or kak industries k spec bcg that diverts the gas down the magwell instead of out the ejection port.
Makes the mag and ammo dirty a bit from what I've read.

Christensen is selling Superlative adjustable gas block with their logo, you can just can buy it somewhere else or get another brand AGB with .936" ID (verify the size first). I don't think Riflespeed makes one in that diameter.

To tune the gas at the source you can use AGB or BRT EZTune gas tube (BRTs are single setting, you need to know what you are ordering). If you are not doing AGB - then you can try bootleg adjustable bcg and/or heavier buffers. Kak downvent BCG and Raptor SD might help a little with gas to the face thing, but won't help with the gun being overgassed.

How is the rifle gassed now without the suppressor? What are the ejection patterns with your handloads and factory 223 and 5.56 (2-3-4 o'clock)? Are you going to shoot it with the suppressor before deciding on AGB, if yes, what are the ejection patterns with that particular can? Will it only be run suppressed from now on? What kind of spring and buffer is there now (i.e. basic spring and carbine buffer or braided Geissele with h1/h2)?

@GlockBy umm wow and thank you! Currently the brass is ejecting at 3 o'clock. I would be installing a muzzlebreak that can take the can directly. And the plan would be to always shoot it with the can.

We should have the can in a week. If the weather ever gets to at least 32 degrees outside we will just shoot it and see how it behaves.

I will remove the buffer and spring today or tomorrow and report back as to what is in there.

Appreciate the research on what AGB will work. I will look into Superlative. I thought it was proprietary. Glad it's not.

If you wanna get real fancy, you could try and convert it to a piston setup from superlative arms.
That'll move the gas ejection up to the front of the rifle rather than the rear.
I have it on 2 or 3 of my guns (no suppressor) and have no gas issues whatsoever

You are welcome!

You did get the the Riflespeed for your other rifle, correct? Did you tune it yet? I think conventional wisdom is to tune the AGB down to where the rifle cycles and locks back on the last round, then open up one more click. If you do that with your weakest ammo in the coldest season, you should be gtg year around, at least for a hunting rifle. For "go to" gun you might want more gas for reliability in adverse conditions. FYI, if you tune this way with the can on, gun might not cycle properly with the can off.

I would try the can without AGB first to see how it feels and ejects, you probably will want to step up to a heavier buffer though. Only downside is you will have to install the muzzle brake twice if you decide you want AGB after all.

Radian SD is a good step up to seal the cracks in the upper receiver where your nose goes. Then again, so many others do similarly well. I run Breek Sledgehammer handles in my suppressed uppers and they do an admirable job. Cut out most of the gas by running an Armaspec captured H2 buffer and spring assembly though. Night and day. You might need to run an H3 but the H2 gave me just enough to cycle the shittiest weakest .223s unsuppressed so I kept it at that.

Yep, if I had to guess I would say H2 would probably be it for his mid length gas to run both suppressed and unsuppressed. H3 for suppressed only if can has high enough back pressure.

What is the weight penalty of this pistol system vs DI with AGB? Do they even make one in .936?

My gun with the riflespeed is kind of tuned. I have not had a chance to really put it through it's paces because of the cold temps. I think in another week temps may finally get above freezing.

BRT gas tubes here. I tune for reliability unsuppressed. I wanted fewer moving parts so have not gone to agb on my builds as of yet. I also typically run Super42 or Springco blue buffer springs with H2 or h3 buffers.
