Massachusetts Rifle Association - Woburn, MA

50 yards = hand gun and rifle. Shot on target paper.
100/200 yards = rifle. Shot on target paper.

Also, at least as of a couple of years ago, the tests at 50 yards were standing, and off of a bench at 100/200. (If you're like me and never shoot off of a bench you might want to try it first! Not hard, though.)

I did the qualifying test about 6 mo ago. both 50 yd and 100/200 and shot all from the bench as did all others.dont advise using a .22 on the 200 yd test.pretty damned hard to see that little hole that far away!

I do agreed that it's hard to see if you using a .22 or .223/556 on the 200 yards. A cheap spotting scope with about 60x will do the trick. I have a crappy barska scope and I have no problem finding my shot on the 200 yards.

they told me at the desk that I needed to have a spotting scope w/me. I did have one but many others did not. Ended up spotting for those without. Its really to your benefit to have one, pretty nice when you are there after you qualify to see what you are doing...

How long after paying your dues, do you actually get to shoot at Mass Rifle? Looking at the application form they list:
1. Application with payment due up front.
2. Orientation with written and shooting test
3. Interview with membership committee and then board of directors
4. Welcome with board of directors

If I can't make each meeting (I travel for work) it seems like it could takes many months.

Are annual dues prorated?

Thanks

Very fast. It's right after the orientation and interview which were same day for me. I didn't meet w bod. I joined in 09. Not sure about prorate, I think we would. We sometimes run specials.

Hi Wadcutter,

You usually get a year. We tried for a very short time to have members meet with the Board, but it was too cumbersome, so you don't have to worry about that.

Basically, you sign up, go through the orientation, which includes a video, written test and shooting test (all on the same day - takes about 90 minutes total), then have the interview usually within the same month. So overall it takes about a month sometimes a few days more.

The way our dues system works is we send a bill out the begining of September that needs to be paid by December 31st. This covers the person for the next year.

The dues are not prorated, but we usually offer a special starting in the Spring that adds extra months so people do not loose out. For example in the worst case, if you wanted to join in say May or June, instead of charging the normal $295 we would add $40 ($335 total) and this would cover all the remaining part of the current year and all of the next year. So if you joined and completed the process in June 2011, you would pay $335 and you would not have received a bill this September. You would not get a bill until September 2012 that would be due December 31, 2012 and you would get the 6 extra months for $40.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to either come down to the club on Wednesday evenings or Sunday Mornings for a tour and to ask any questions you have. You can also feel free to send me a PM and I will be happy to answer any other questions.

Also worth noting that they don't cash your check until after you've been approved for membership and get your keytag, so you don't really "pay" until you're able to begin using the facilities.

From the MRA forum:

"The MRA webstie is currently unavailable due to a technical issue involving domain transfer. We expect this to last for the entire week. The web site should be available by the end of this week."

I see that "Fun Day" is this Sunday. I think I've read somewhere that in the past they offerred a discount on the membership on this day, is that right?

Anyone know the process on qualifying for the outdoor 50 yard range? I know you need to setup an apt. on WED night, but what is the process is qualifying?

Nevermind...I just ready back a couple of pages and saw what the process is like. I do have a question though. Do you have to qualify on the 50 yard outdoor with a pistol AND rifle? I have two AR15s, both with Red dots on them, neither one magnified. I can harldy see a shot on target at 25 yards with a pistol, nevermind at 50 yards.

Yes, you need to shoot both rifle and pistol for 50 yards range qualification. No limit on whether the rifle/pistol has a scope or not.
I shoot the 50 yards with my 10/22 with 3-9x scope and SW 1911. It's more important that you have a spoting scope or binocular so you can call out your shot. As long as your shot on paper, you're good to go.

Good luck.

Is there any way to practice for this qualification? I don't see any problem hitting a 50yd target with a rifle but a pistol will be more difficult (I would think). I don't believe I've ever shot a handgun at a 50yd target; 25yd is the max I've done and 25yd seems to be the longest available range before qualifying. Or is it really not that much of a challenge?

It's nearly a 3' wide target and you just have to get it on the paper, you can even use a bench rest if you want. If you can put your shots on the paper on the 25 yard Loeb range with the smaller targets, you really shouldn't have any problem.
