Dad recently passed & I am inventorying and "Checking In" his stuff to my rather chunky spreadsheet. It has an index page w/the most likely to be needed info, and each SN is a clickable link to the page for that gun. The page has EVERYTHING I can find out about it, what dad had in his notes, links to SN lookups, videos, etc.

Me and dad always had the same taste in guns and women. Older stuff, esp milsurps, wheelguns, 1911s, etc.

As for the women part, he had requested "Fat Bottom Girls" to be played at his funeral. The funeral director commented that in all his time in the field he knew that was the first time it had been played at a funeral he directed, and expected it would be the last.

Anyway, one of these is a Winchester Model of 1917. I will be keeping this, and I *THINK* it's a CMP gun, but I can't find any markings on it to indicate that. CMP will do SN lookups and provide info for $20 each, so I'll likely be doing that as I can't find any paperwork on this, the H&R M1 Garand CMP "Special" in .308, or either of the 1903 A3s. In his notes he said it has a Criterion barrel, which also leads me to belive it's a CMP gun.

That said, if folks could take a look at it & let me know what I need to look at/up, a ballpark price (I'm keeping it, but want that for my spreadsheet), and the like, I would appreciate it

That's a nice example, but they're not particularly rare. I know a lot more about the Pattern 14, but I'd guess about $1,000ish. You can see Gunbroker's completed auctions show anything from mid-$700s up to about $1200, so.

Condolences. I'm glad he had someone appreciative to pass it on to.

Thanks. That was about what I expected when I looked at GB last week.

I bought a Patt 14 years and years ago, in original nick with volley sights, and I thought I was breaking the bank at $1,000. At that time, you could find M1917s for about $400 all day long.

Times sure have changed, lol.

Wait, Mosins aren't supposed to be $400+?

I was looking for an SKS late last year and was in a well known place here in NH. They had maybe 4, they all looked like they had been dragged by a tank from Moscow to Beijing and back, and the cheapest was $700.

Agreed on the ~$1000 price on the m1917.

I can’t say if it is a CMP gun. If it is I bet the CMP didn’t put the Criterion barrel on it before passing through their hands. It could have gone back to them for barrel replacement at a later date.

Their MO on bolt guns (1903, 1903a3, 1917) is inspect, grade, and sell. They have never offered a “special” or “expert” type grade on bolt guns like they do with Garands.

My condolences as well. I would ditto what others have said...It's a nice example so around $1k seems about right.
