Mosin is obviously less expensive. I am not convinced it is a less capable firearm. Is ammo easier to find for the Mosin or Mauser? What are some of the intangibles that I might not be considering between the two?

Get both.

They each kick like a mule and milsurp ammo is relatively cheap and easy to find. Although the Mauser might be a bit more accurate and the new manufactured ammo is more varied depending on the application.

I have seen 7.62x54R available in spam cans at most gun shops recently but I don't think it matters. The Mosins are cheap, buy one. I'd get an M44. :)

I prefer the VZ 24. I have 3 of them.. I have 7 mausers. I sold all my mosins. but that is me......I did not mind the mosin shooting, The cheap shellac the russians put on them flakes off every time i looked at them. I don't mind refinishing my Mausers. It felt like you buy a arsenal refurb mosin because it was in nice shape you'd want it to stay that way for a while. you end up having to strip it and redo it. The scratches drove me nuts.

I like the action set up on the Mauser a little better. Don't forget the Yugo Mausers! you can find them cheaper sometimes and they are nice as well.
Fred will probably come by soon and tell you the values of the Mosins,,,,, and he'll also be right. [smile]
Buy what you like!

Speaking of Hex Mosins!!!! See my signature below! If you win, you have more money for the Mauser AND Ammo!!! [smile][wink]

Seriously though, I have varients of both rifles and both are fun as hell to shoot. I tend to shoot the Mosin's more, but that is more my preference then anything else. There are many kinds of both, so just remember that once you start down this road you will be broke buying up the different kinds. As stated above, the M44 is a good starting place. You used to be able to pick them up for under $100 but prices have gone up on this model. A good condition one is in the $175 and up range now.

I am looking for a shooter, good accuracy, fun, serves as a rugged defensive arm if need be. I think the last part is covered by a surplus military rifle. I know that all of these rifles have a certain provenance - all have history and that does appeal to me (I have a BA in History). Do folks feel the mauser has better accuracy on the whole? I figure that I am spending about 120 for a mosin or 200+ for a mauser of similar condition. Also, the 91/30 is a bit longer than the Mauser - making the Mauser a bit handier.

I have a Mauser and my friend has a Mosin, My Mauser is a Sharp Scalpel, his Mosin is a SLIGHTLY duller Scalpel.

Both are great guns, the Mauser is usually somewhat more accurate, the action is much smoother and easy to work with( it is a Mauser after all. ).

But Mauser ammo is almost scary expensive, 20 rds for 30 bucks of 7.92x57 if you can find it. compared to the likely $4 for 20 rds of the 7.62x54r for the Mosin at Walmart. (Not totally sure on pricing but you get the idea)

Mosins are a lot cheaper too, anywhere from $60-140, compared to the Mauser's larger price tag of $300+

But the Mosin's action tends to be very Sticky or just plain Rough for whatever reason, pulling the bolt open can be a workout on some of them.

if you do get a Mauser get one of the German ones due to parts being easily found and there in great condition usually. if you get a Mosin, just buy another rifle for parts lmao

I have an old Turkish Mauser built in 1895 that fires like its new and I love it, but its so expensive to feed that I'm likely gonna buy a Mosin to use more often.

Basically in the end Both are great, trustworthy, reliable rifles. Your just gotta choose if you want slightly the bigger(Mauser = $$$) round, or slightly smaller(Mosin = $$ lol) round.

I have yet to see an M44 or M38 for less than 250 - and for that price I would get a mauser. The two Mauser types that are on my radar right now are a Yugo M48 and a Czech vz24. None of the Yugo's I have seen come with any accessories, some of the vz24's do. The 91/30's I am looking at come with the full package.

I have one of each m44, and m48 Yugo mauser.

The yugo is a nice accurate heavy hitter....nice stock finish

the M44 is a kicking mule

They're both must haves being as cheap as they are.

Would like to find a german 98k, or Finnish...

I have both a MN 91/30 and a c(v)z-24, as well as a couple others (K31, Enfield). One of the biggest problems I have (being in MA) is the volume that the ammo takes up for all these different calibers, and keeping that ammo securely stored. You are wise to buy the ammo in bulk, and keeping lots of ammo for four different calibers is a challenge.

I have about a cubic foot of ammo (maybe more) to feed these guys, and that's after selling off all but 80 762x54R rounds. I'm planing to dump my MN 91/30 (round receiver), and my sporterized Enfield. to anyone that wants to buy them. This might be another possibility for you as well. The furniture on my MN is a bit beat up, but it does have a scope and is pretty accurate with the scope.

Basically, I've gotten bored with the MN. Don't get me wrong, it's a great gun, and was my first C&R purchase, but at this point, I'm trying to thin the herd a little, and I find that my cz-24 and K-31 are insanely accurate (especially the K-31, those Swiss know how to make guns).

Hope this helps.

As long as you can get one with a good bore and muzzle, I'd get the VZ24. Its collectable, accurate, not too long, and while ammo is more expensive than 7.62x54r, you can still find surplus ammo at gun shows that won't cost you a fortune.

[bow][bow][bow][thumbsup] agreed - see my recent Milsurp post! go vintage or re-arsenalled, Either way a great gun!

You only keep 80 rounds per gun?!

The M39 is collectable, accurate, not too long, and is tougher than nails. And the ammo is still cheap.

(I'm currently withstanding the urge to impulse buy another)

M44 muzzle blast is rather epic, and the Mosin safety is basically unusable. I prefer my Swedish Mauser, but I seldom shoot them anymore.

Of course the M39 is a better choice, but its not one the OP listed.

I think you're just trying to justify buying another for yourself which in this case I won't stop you.[smile]

Question is what are you looking for in a rifle? Accuracy? Ease of operation? Collectability?

I have seen 7.62x54R available in spam cans at most gun shops recently but I don't think it matters. The Mosins are cheap, buy one. I'd get an M44. :)

The OP listed Mosin or Mauser. Although the M39 is a refined battle implement in comparison to the Russian/Soviet varieties... it is still a Mosin.

And yeah, if I pass my boards I'll probably place an order the next day.
