Need a good multi purpose rifle

The fact that you will enjoy owning and shooting it is simply additional benefit.

If the SHTF and you find yourself fighting next to our soldiers, you'll want to run what they have (interchangable parts, mag-swapping, ammo-swapping, etc.)

Zero Hour Arms has tons of them (ok, more like a dozen, but that is a "ton" right now)

He has them in multiple configurations and his prices are reasonable.

Or, if you would like, you can get a stripped lower from ZHA and build your own (had plenty of those last time I was there too).

Being your first, you may want to get one built already (IMO)

A scoped Remington 700 in what ever caliber you fancy would be a good all around rifle.

Agreed. Rem 700 is a great all around rifle, as are a scoped Ruger 10-22, Mini 14 or Mini 30. Good semi's for hunting and/or defense and a lot less scary, costly or complex.
