Daisy, welcome aboard.

Please do post and contribute . . . questions or answers.

You'll find it a lot more congenial here than ARfcom, and we're mostly local folks.

Read up and hope you'll join us at AFS for their shoot in August (27th as planned now).

Thanks, Len. I'll be there, GPK is my boyfriend. lol

Nickle, it's no joke. At the Randy Cain class I finally realized why most of the time my groups sucked. I can't focus on the front sight unless I hyper-extend my neck . . . a very uncomfortable position! This is due to progressive bifocals designed for near = working on a computer.

Just ordered the ICE system and having lenses custom made for focusing in on the front sight (25.5") so I'll see what I can see on Friday.

Daisy, I knew that but I promised someone (not GPK) that I wouldn't out you.

Please ask GPK to come back here and keep us up-to-date on his plans for the shoot? Thanks.

So I'll ask you now . . .

Has GPK been at AFS since it opened? As soon as I walked in there last week, he looked familiar to me. I've only been in AFS maybe 6-8 times since it opened, so I was wondering if I had met/seen him somewhere else before.

If you want to take it offline, you should be able to Email me from the forum or I probably gave you the address when we corresponded before by PM on that other forum.

Len - This may need to go the training forum under a new thread but I'll ask you here first. I thought Randy Cain's class was a combat / defensive pistol class. In other words, training for a gun fight. Are you actually picking up a sight picture with sight alignment and focusing on the front sight?

Len, I have to take my glasses of when using a computer, and I also have bi-focals. The lower (near) lenses were ground so that I could work on assemblies/firearms, and still wear the glasses. Flying springs aren't good for your eyesight.

Tony, yes in most of our shooting in the Jim Crews and Randy Cain classes we were supposed to get a sight picture. Some ultra-close stuff was point-shoot.

Both of the above classes were defensive handgun classes, as is the Gabe Suarez class later this week.

Each instructor has made the point that shooting fast doesn't win gun fights over shooting accurately. Something along the lines of "you can't miss fast enough to win". [I butchered it, hopefully Jim Conway can come along and correct me on the exact wording.]

Next week, I'll post more on this in the training forum, after the Gabe Suarez class is over.

Nickle, I'm far sighted. Everything up close looks like blobs without glasses.

I certainly agree that shooting fast (and missing) doesn't win a gun fight. However, there's a lot more that has to come into play. Distance is first and foremost and your position of cover is another.

Concentrating on the front sight and blurring the target works very well when bullseye shooting at a static target. Most people even close one eye (another bad habit). Neither of these traits are conducive to CQB. And, defensive pistol encounters are CQB.

Thanks for the warm welcome all!!

cdkayak, actually, I need a sponsor. [wink] I have shot there a couple of times with a friend. He would sponsor me in a heartbeat, but he's busy til fall. It's sweet facility. I work in Westbrook, so it's convienient for me after work to run down and snap a few off!

Derek, I did see the trace. That was pretty cool! The instructors were calling hit or miss, before the round even hit!

Heres a pic of the target. My impact is the one in the center:

Hutch,

I work in the same town. PM inbound and we'll set something up to get you in down at Scarborough.

Hi! Daisy checking in...Still trying to navigate the site, I'm a lurker basically over from ar15.com.

Hi Mrs W!

Glad to be here!

:P

Hi!
PlaymoreMinds also present and accounted for and like Daisy I am trying to navigate as I lurk. Hope to get to a shoot (maybe the AFS one) soon and drag my hubby with me.
Anybody know a good sitter? [lol]
I am Ex Mil like Mrs WildWeasel, and (regrettably) have not handled a weapon in 13 years. Wow. Never thought I'd be old enuf to say I hadn't done anything for that amount of time!
Anyway, I tend to be silly and sarcastic, so please laugh at all the right prompts. [wink]
Glad to have found this place (Thanks Mrs WW) and once I get the lay of the land I hope to be able to contribute to the forum.

Welcome aboard, PMM!

Sitter? Why not teach the little ones to shoot?

As for getting older... yeah. I know what you mean. Astonishing to realize that I've:
Owned my current mototcycle 19 years.
Owned my Ruger 10/22 for 24 years.
Lived up here for 18 years.
gotten to be officially middle aged - I don't get proofed any more. :(

Anyway, silly and sarcastic are good... just don't get nasty. Why, I understand that some of the people reading this board are ARMED! [lol]

Dwarven wasn't even paying attention to you're post. I know her from another board,my comment was more to Tony, and Derek....... [lol] [lol] [lol] [lol] Sorry.

Hello all and pleased to meet you! I'm SigZiggy, and came here in hopes to find a more pleasant environment to share my love for shooting and the outdoors.

I live in TX, but am originally from Michigan and still have family there. I love to travel, and now I have one more reason to do it.

Thanks to the ladies for letting me know about your forum.

You know you're starting to get old when you remember buying handguns through the mail as a teenager, with no more paperwork than a money order. :? :?

Welcome aboard, PlaymoreMinds, Sig. (Take the advice; as soon as they stop crapping their pants, they're old enough to start shooting.)

Ken

SigZiggy,

Welcome. There's a good group of people here, definitely a pleasant place to hang out.

Trust me...My friends call me the "Mother of all Demons" for a reason. The last thing I am prepared to handle are my spawn with weapons in their mitts!
But I DID laugh out loud at the age requirement above!
Hey ZIGGY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <can't find the kiss emoticon> Mhua!
ETA: thanks guys for the hearty welcome!

Welcome to the new folks. I sincerely hope you'll like it here.

I've been away for the past 4 days, attending a self-defense [twisted] [twisted] handgun course. Feel like a drip rag due to the miserable humidity the past 4 days.

Hopefully some of my fellow students will be joining here shortly.
