ok, i'm nuts...

Or maybe I live in rural KY and my backstop is 2000 acres of kudzu and maybe a few head of cattle.

When I lived in Braintree my defensive weapon was a handgun because the odds of having any kind of fight at a distance greater than about 20 feet was pretty much 0.

I moved here and reevaluated my defensive strategies and started practicing with the rifle a lot more.

It's important to constantly reevaluate your strategies and not limit yourself to a single mindset. Fights are dynamic so then our strategies should be as well.

This is a great post. Too many people give cookie-cutter info based on YouTube videos or whatever the instructor said. They forget that there are lots and lots of different scenarios and variables at play. And there are many different use cases that depend on those variables. 230 grain FMJs are a good choice for a lot of those, while HPs may be a good choice for others. Saying that 230 grain FMJs are a bad choice is a very short sighted thing to say.

Plus pistol caliber debates are pretty lame since they're all a compromise and less effective than what you really want in a fight, a long gun. Where I live now you can just keep a loaded long gun in the front seat of your car, or on the refrigerator. In a free state a pistol is only for if you get caught with your pants down. And even then you probably have a truck gun close by.

You are entitled to your opinion. But 230 grain ball ammo is proven to be very effective in terms of “stopping power”. Whether or not over penetration is a concern depends on the application or where someone is carrying. It’s a good round, has a proven track record of putting people in the dirt for good, and feeds reliably in all pistols that chamber 45 ACP. I recommend it.
It's not "my opinion", it's fact. Something that eludes you. I am done. Good luck.
