Nomad TI. Going on the AR. I don't do mag dumps so it will be perfect for my intended purpose. Shooting yotes.

And I'm calling the local gunsmith to talk about threading my tikka tx3 lite. If it's a go and I don't have to chop down the length too much, I will have him do my wife's savage lady hunter as well.

They multiply. I’ve picked up 3 in the last 6 months and number 4 is in view 😁

The goal ultimately is to run suppressors on two hunting rifles, not just the ar. The first is a tikka t3x lite in 308. Barrel is 20.5 inches. The second is a savage lady hunter in 6.5cm with an 18 inch barrel.

I just spoke with a gunsmith and he told me that I need an outside diameter of .600, 5/8 inches back from the muzzle. I'm assuming it is for a shoulder. I have that with the tikka. I can get to. 600 about 1.25 inches back on the savage. So it looks like the savage would need to get chopped by .625 to meet the minimum requirement. Savage barrel is starting to get short.

So I have some questions:

1. What are your thoughts about where barrel length should be for these guns? I will be using the nomad ti that I got for the ar on mine. I will likely try to get the same can for my wife's savage.

2. Will a can add velocity? So, can I gain back what may be lost if we need to chop the savage? Does a can effectively add to barrel length in a meaningful way?

3. Is a barrel ever just too long after adding a suppressor? Not from a standpoint that it is too long to lug around, but will it mess with harmonics because I'm dangling a bunch of weight off the muzzle?

4. Would you chop the tikka? If I do does it mess with accuracy? That gun just shoots good right now.

No, it won't. It can affect POI and accuracy (usually improves it).

It does affect POI but I have not heard this. It is annoying to have 16+ inches of barrel and another 8" of can, especially if you're in and out of vehicles.
4. Would you chop the tikka? If I do does it mess with accuracy? That gun just shoots good right now.

Can you use 9/16-24 thread instead of 5/8-24? It requires smaller major diameter on the threads. Muzzle devices are readily available in 9/16-24, my 30-30 is threaded like that and I have griffin and curtis tactical brake/FH mounts.

Yeah approval times are crazy these days. The paperwork is all electronic, my dealer uses all the saved info on my ATF E-account, I pay with CC, and I got approved for my latest silencer in 3 days. My DD Grenade launcher was approved in 2 days.
My next ones will be a mono-core 22 silencer and maybe a 300blk with AK-74 threading.

trust approval times are still much longer over individual times and well over a month. Still not bad though.

with those modern cans - do they even differ from model to model actual sound suppression amount wise? or was design improved enough for any brand to be pretty much the same?

When it come to sound suppression. All I’m looking for in center fire cans is quiet enough for NO ear pro. Rimfire cans, I want an affordable can. They will be hearing safe out of a pistol already.
The more you spend the better can you will get material and durability wise, but each rifle will be different when it comes to DB. That is when you need to start watching YouTube vids based on what you be using it on, caliber and barrel length.

You're not gonna get that. Sonic crack itself is around 130db so any can suppressing supersonic rounds will be at least that. People say shooting a 22LR rifle outdoors is 'not that loud' and you don't need hearing muffs if outdoors, but you're still chipping away at your hearing little by little. Sure it's not like listening to a full auto SAW with no ear pros 6 feet from your ear but it still damages just cumulatively more slowly.

I only shoot subs in my 22 suppressor. In most cases the bullet hitting the target, or even mud, makes more noise than the shot itself.
Plus I’m already deaf from 30 years of shooting.
I have some 556 subs that are just under (noticeable) the sound of a 22 out of a rifle. But don’t work the action of any of my ARs
22 rifles I’ve e never used hearing protection.

RC

Did you go the trust route?
No. It's not worth it. Even the guy at shop was like, nobody is going to care. I'm getting my wife one anyway for her gun. Just need to get her barrel threaded. And honestly, I'm not too worried about it when I drop dead 25 years from now. By then I hope all this nonsense is done and suppressors are no big deal.

Yea idk what he is talking about. Even with 22 supers, the action is louder when suppressed.

I 100% use hear pro with all suppressed shooting, even 22 subs. I have tinnitus even though I have always used plugs and muffs and always worn plugs when doing anything loud (going on factory floor, mowing the lawn, doing carpentry etc.). I have only fired a handful of shots without hear pro, mainly when hunting. I had hearing testing done and my hearing is actually really good, but the tinnitus is pretty loud and annoying...dr said it was due to stress which is a definite possibility especially now that I'm technically a supervisor at work and given my GF's chronic health problems, but I still don't want it to be any worse if it is from exposure to loud sounds.

I'm going to be back full-time in NC in about two weeks (yaaaay!). I want a new dedicated 556 short suppressor for my 12.5" SBR. This is mainly for concussion and flash reduction. I'm going to be carrying this a lot through mountains, so I want something pretty durable, light and short, that isn't outrageously expensive, but like I said gets good flash reduction and some concussion and sound reduction. I was thinking a griffin Recce-K in 556 since I already have a bunch of griffin muzzle devices. Any opinions on that or another can?

What’s your budget. I have heard good things about the recce 5k. Haven’t tried one yet. I was just shooting my Polonium K yesterday and really enjoy that thing. I use one with a Plan A for my tapermount hosts.

Around 800? So long as it doesn't get me a heavy or poor-performer (made that mistake with my first rifle can and had to get it rebuilt to be usable). I have also heard the polonium-k is good. Does the hub mount allow you to basically swap out and use any muzzle device? I have not kept up with suppressor tech very well, I bought my stuff in 2013 and haven't done any NFA since then.

I really like my Polo K as well. It has standard 1.375×24 threads and comes with a 1/2x28 direct thread mount. I removed it and screwed in a Rearden Atlas mount so now I can easily swap it between any gun with a rearden muzzle device. Zero regrets.

You should also be able to get the Polo K, rearden atlas mount and rearden muzzle device for around $700, possibly a little less.

how is flash reduction? This is mainly for my "go-time" rifle that I will be using a fair amount under NODs.

Can't give you an honest assessment. I don't notice any flash but I've also only used it during the daytime.

Edit: Seems to do pretty well in that department based on YouTube videos.

Here's one...Flash comparison

Polo K is the cheapest can in the video by a good margin, too.

You're welcome to try out my Sierra5 if you've got keymo device, or simply shoot my 11.5, to get a hang of it.

Sweet, yeah I would appreciate that. I'll be in the Fuquay area starting Feb 10, maybe we can get together for a range session if you're not too far away.

I'm in the Lake Norman area but regularly shoot in Polkton.
Fuquay isn't too far to meet and shoot with an NES'r either, I drove 3700 miles last week lol.

Suppressors should be accessories, or Title I firearms at most. But until then - trusts are cheap, so your only real cost is extra waiting time. Ultimately it is up to you to decide if they are worth it, but IMO, looking at your use case, they are!

This is kind of a low probability, high impact risk. Just remember that neither your dealer in Montana, nor dealers that are against trusts on this board, will rush to you help and support your defense if you run into "somebody who cares" or selected for persecution for other reasons. Dealers also have a monetary interest in steering you towards a personal transfer. Higher rate of denials and longer process time associated with trust transfers add extra cost if they move a lot of inventory.
