I had planned on backing off on purchasing firearms to save some money. However, if BO gets in, I'm thinking I ought to buy a .308 battle rifle as those will be first to go.

I voted for the FAL, as that's probably what I'm going to buy to fill that niche. I already have a Garand, so I feel like the M1A is too similar. Though, if it's in your budget an M1A with a Troy MCS would be really badass.

Personally... I'd go with an FAL.

More spare parts and inexpensive pre-ban 20 round mags available.

The M1A is a close second though (mostly for it's accuracy).

I've had it at the top of my shopping list, but I'm still trying to justify the cost, especially when topped with quality rings and glass.

Not trying to be Scriv here but why don't you go look at the choices and decide for yourself. YOU will be the one shooting it and the only opinion that matters in the end is yours. The poll will do nothing except bring out the fanboys for all of your choices listed. Pick 3, find them to look at or shoot, and make your choice based on the info.

Yes, everbody should have at least 1 Battle rifle ( .30 cal, mag-fed, semi-auto ) in the collection. You want to shoot a FAL, let me know and we'll go to Westwood Gun Club or yours if it's convient and you can get hands on with it.

1. FAL (buying new, DSA Arms) - pre-ban mags are everywhere and they are inexpensive.
2. M-14 (buying new, 1. LRB Arms, 2. Fulton Armory, 3. SA Inc) - excellent rifles, pre-ban mags tend to be more expensive.

I've got an AR-10, love the thing; but on my short list to get is an M1A. If you want to try it out, you are more than welcome to it. I believe Collectors has an AR-10 A3 for at the moment.

For anyone interested in the PTR 91 option, I've been doing a lot of research on it (talking to the company sales manager, people of TC who made the barrels and people from the 3 distributors in MA who carry it. I'm not going to bother posting it all here but for the price, I can't imagine one can get a better 308 these days. Oh, and the best part is, there are plenty of MA friendly models.

You have a point but these polls typically include explanations of why people like one vs. the other. Plus, it's going to be awhile before I can attend a shoot to try a good variety.

Finally, at least one of those that I mentioned (the POF) will be very difficult to try before buying.

Also, thanks for the offer Joe. I'll probably ask to do that at some point.

I voted FAL, simply because I have one and could afford it at the time.
If cost weren't an object, I do really like the '91
BTW: Check the classifieds to see if Scrivener is still selling his HK91.

Thanks Chris. That's very appreciated and I will probably take you up on that at some point.

I won't be buying this until after the first of the year but I'd like to be prepared.

You could buy the HK91 (I'd sure like to) or you could spend literally half as much on a PTR which is a G3 copy but made with the same machinery and tooling that produced the HKG3 in Portugal, uprooted, brought over here, and matched with a TC barrel made right around here. I've heard several owners report 1MOA with new ones.

Yeah, I saw Scriv's HK. For that kind of money, I'd buy a POF.

The JP LRP-07 (their version of the AR10) is worth a look. Close looks and test firing available in Hopkinton by appointment.

I would run with either or both a FAL or HK91, Reason they are both accurate and both have very inexpensive mags.

The HK91 or clone if you must (for the Wussies that dont want to cough up 2000+) the aluminum alloy mags are in the area of 2.00 to 2.50 each.

Steel NIW mags are in the area of 5.00 Each.

Lets see that deal with M1A mags ? Nope I didn't think so aint gonna happen.

Guys on WWW.HKPRO.COM are selling them real cheap as are others around the net.

Not that you need 100 mags but times will be changing soon and just as after the 1994 AWB value will go up soon.

I voted M1A because I like the classic look of it best. In all reality though if I were in the market for one today, I would most likely end up with a FAL due to affordability.

i have a ptr and love it...i also have an m1a...if i had to choose it would be the ptr...i like it so much i just bought another one!

however if you plan to reload...get something else! the extractor on the ptr is so strong it just eats the brass

I guess I'm a wuss then.

M1A my friend...M1A....Reliable, accurate, modular. You can go for the classic wood and steel in a nice tiger striped birch, go retro in USGI fiberglass, or transform it into a modern fighting rifle by wrapping a Troy MCS around it...Plus shooting an M1A is like a well tuned watch. I like the HK platform, but love my M1A....You may too.

I found an unfired FAL for a very good price. Pre ban mags are around, it shoots great and very accurate. I brought it as the price was right, I like the rifle, and it suits my needs.

I wish I could afford an M1A right now. Anyone heard if and/or when FN is actually releasing a civilian version of the SCAR? I'd throw that in for consideration.

That is the way I'll likely go (not that I'd mind any of the others). I'd actually like one with a nice wood stock.

Anyone have an opinion on Kel-tec's RFB? As far as I can tell it's not generally available yet but it looks interesting, a .308 bullpup that takes FAL magazines.

I voted for the M1A since that is the one I am most familiar with. However I would consider the FAL a good choice also.

We'll have to go to the range if you go with this option for a side by side comparison of the AR-10 and the A1.

Go with the FAL, I just picked up a nice pre-89 Springfield SAR-48 and it shoots like a dream. They are great weapons...mags are plentiful & cheap!
