For a RI LTC you have to qualify; welcome to the new era. In an odd twist, you have to qualify with at least the caliber you want to carry. Qualify with a .45, you can use a .44 Magnum. Qualify with a .357 Magnum, you can't carry a .44, .45, or Desert Eagle - but who does. Qualification is on the military L pistol target at 25 yards. Normally I shoot 2/3 this distance with smaller calibers, so a test run was in order. Ammo was standard Winchester White Box; 230gr at 835fps and 356ft/lbs kinetic energy.
Conditions weren't the best; 76F, very humid, drizzle, breezy. I had got back to the car before the full rain started. I made up my own targets with a 100% scale center, and approximate rings drawn with a sharpie and a thumbtack. Seven practice rounds with the M11, and 12 with the M17. Not an excuse, but I wasn't at my best as I fell down the basement stairs last night. You get 30 rounds; maximum score 300, passing is 190, bullseye measures five inches in diameter.
Shot the M17 first; first six DA (high left), the rest SA. Revolver shot high...I also forgot my multiplication tables, using six moons and not five. Score 255, eight-black, and four-X. Even if you subtract six black, I passed.
The M11 shot low. Scored a 220 with seven black and three-X. Might have done better, but I was really tired at this point and in pain from my fall. All things being equal, I think I prefer the M17...sights are a little better, and the process a little more deliberate. A second round, I think, is in order.
