Prep of The Day Thread

Loaded up my faraday cages. Just in case
I've got tight fitting metal trash can that won't let my cell phone receive signals.

I put a small generator, some cheap radios, a small solar panel, and some other things in there.

Hopefully the can will protect the items "just in case".

they say if you seal the edges it works pretty good, so I hear.
I've got some faraday fabric, going to weld up some cages after work and stick things together.
You can only do so much, the research I've done on all the faraday stuff doesn't lead to perfect conclusions.....unless you buy a $50,000 faraday room or something.

Does that work?
I have no idea.

Yup.

Various "interweb" sources say that "tight fitting" metal containers and some microwave ovens can work if they don't allow a cell phone to receive a signal when inside them.

I've watched examples of ammo cans sealed with metal tape keep the signal out.

Before I had the generator and two-way radios, I kept a radio in a spare microwave in the basement.

Been picking away at odds-and-ends. Water purification tabs, mylar blankets, Bic lighters, Gamma lids, electrolyte drink mix, potassium iodine tabs, oil of clove, security window film, etc.

As far as freeze dried food, has anyone done the math on calories per dollar?
Pricey but you pay for the long shelf life and reduced storage volume.

I ordered a set of water filter cartridges from My Patriot Supply on Friday - not arriving until this Friday. Got an email from them on a 4 week food stash deal on Sunday - orders and not yet shipped.

My Patriot Supply has always shipped fast / think a year supply arrives on Tuesday or Wednesday from a weekend order.

Something is up
Are they typically a good source?

Picked up four Quansheng UVK5 radios. For a cheap Chinese radio, these things are very capable.

Broad banded UHF/VHF, HF receive, air band AM capable, third party software that further expands capabilities, encrypted messaging capability, a scrambler that actually works, USBc charging plug (common to most cell phones) clear display, mic gain settable up to 15db enhancement and more.
FM broadcast receive (but doesn't revert to monitored frequencies in the VFO, or I have a setting incorrect. Will continue to learn the radio.

There's a bunch of youtubes on this radio and a couple of variants, and I haven't seen one that is not positive.

These put all the others to shame as far as capabilities.................and being the admitted "radio whore" that I am, [laugh] I'll be ordering several more this week.

Carnivore diet?
Not really. But we eat a lot of it because we have two large freezers usually full of game and access to some great beef and pork. We will eat a lot of veggies when in season. Less so out of season. Although we canned and froze a bunch this year. Eat bread and pasta as well, but all homemade.

Rendering beef tallow. We have eliminated vegetable oils from our cooking. Animal fats only. This big is batch will be used over and over for some of things we like to fry, like fish, French fries, chicken, etc.

Is there a set of instructions or video you watched to demonstrate the proper process? I wouldn’t mind trying it. Thx.

Picture cooking bacon on the stove top. That left over grease is basically rendered fat. I save and use that stuff too.

But I figured out a secret while rendering bear fat last year. And that is to grind your fat before throwing it in the cooker. It goes much faster and yield is like 95%.

I throw the fat in the slow cooker because it is indirect heat and it won't burn. I start low, 250 degrees so there is some sweat in the bottom. Then I bring it up to 325 degrees. I continuously scoop the fluid out and put it through a strainer. This is the end result....

How do you store your rendered fat ?

I requested all the fat from the last pig I had butchered so I could render it down into lard. I should do that soon to free up the space in my freezer.
I'm thinking about switching to lard for cooking. Any suggestions on brands? Just perusing websites it looks like a lot have additives.
