Prep of The Day Thread

Diatribe incoming and I mean no disrespect but I just watched this episode last night.

Excellent idea and I wish I had time (and the lil wood grater) but if Paul Harrell taught me anything, it’s just buy some fire starting crap. If someone has the time to do it and actually does, that stuff looks awesome. For my time and money though I have to buy premade stuff. For $10-$20/$30 you can buy 3 different packs of chemical crap that’s impervious to water you can put a few of each in your kit (contingency) with waterproof matches and a ferro rod to get the job done.

I tried to take dryer lint and saw dust and wax and put it in egg cartons and I just made a mess and pissed my wife off. For everyone that can pull it off, my hat’s off to you. For everyone else, just spend some money.

Edit- also, just buy some lighters and stash them everywhere. Cold affects butane, but if it’s on your body, a bic lighter is going to light.

I have 6 of these!

Placed the solar generator, comms and some other electronics in a faraday cage. Not expecting anything, but if I didn't and something happens I'd be mighty pissed at myself.

The first of at least 5 flares just began to impact. This is a very interesting test of the Earth's current magnetic field strength. We hit KP 7 as of this post which is very high for these small eruptions.

Hoping to finished the two new farrowing huts this week with the good weather forecasted. Starting interior walls today. Exterior will be tyvek'd then vertical board and batten. All wood and steel roof besides the PT 2x10 flooring was reclaimed from the 3 horse barn my son and I took apart in NW VT and brought home.

I now have two Seventy2 kits from THE SEVENTY2® Survival System

I bought one some time ago for my wife and now that my daughter is out and about - she has one in her vehicle as well. Each of these will get my wife and daughter home from wherever they typically are.

I have a more expansive kit of my own design in my truck as I’m more likely to be out and about long distance - like towing trailers 100 miles from home.

I had missed your piglet adventures - WELCOME TO THE FUN. Some info from a guy who when he left for the USAF we had 100 pigs from piglets to 982lbs boar for breeding.

Build a creep for piglets. An 8ft 2x4 about a foot above the floor (wall to wall, outside of studs so the sow can’t push it off instead pushing against the studs) or so, in the corner with a full sheet of plywood above to make a protected spot and you can hang the heat lamp behind it 2-3 feet off the floor. This makes a triangular area, warm and safe. The sow can’t get the lamp and the piglets can’t get rolled on or squished.

Don’t forget your iron shots, needle teeth and castrations - I’ve done it all.

I do something similar with cotton balls and a chew can. If you're worried about leakage, put a wrap of electrical tape around the can seem. Metal cans are better than the plastic ones.
