rant on........ I worked hard to buy 20 acres in southeastern mass, and still work hard to pay taxes on the land. I have had so many problems during hunting season, and can't help but wonder what is going on with some hunters? The first year I bought the property I removed 4 stands and posted big yellow no trespass signs every 40' ( do you know how much those signs cost?)..... have had signs constantly ripped down and find litter all over the place.

I bought the land to hunt and enjoy with my family and the altercations I have had recently have me wondering what else can be done?

Last year a hunter was in MY stand, on my property, and tried to tell me it was public property. Several other hunters I have kicked out tell me they think its public land. Funny, I paid for a survey, and am certainly taxed for every square foot. Why is it that I have to prove its my property and not the other way around?

On my family's property people constantly cut ATV trails and remove no trespass signs as well. Had one guy tell me he has hunted there for 30 years and has no intentions of stopping. I guess if you break the law long enough it is ok? Funny thing is that they never have the guts to tell me their real name. Other than physically detaining them and waiting for the police/environmental officer to show up, what can I do?

If I want to drive a Ferrari I either pay for the car or I don't drive one, I don't go to my neighbors and take his out for a joy ride. Why is it that some hunters think this is ok? If you can't hunt on known public land, get written permission, or buy your own property, then maybe you shouldn't be hunting???

Other than keep putting the signs up, and taking peoples stands, any other advise?

For all other hunters out there, please let people know that getting written permission to hunt on private property should always be done. Being an ass is just going to further restrict things in the future and hurt all hunters.

Give friends written permission to hunt the land with the understanding they are to boot off and report any hunters found w/o permission? Like your own little police force? After a while people may give up.

You have every reason to rant. Sadly many Fudds feel entitled to hunt where ever there is undeveloped land.

ETA: Any neighbors near by that can let you know when they see trucks parked on or near your property?

I have another friend that I let hunt, along with myself. The problem is that neither of us are police officers, and other than telling someone to leave, there isn't alot we can do. The stream of A-holes seems to just keep coming.

Good call, getting plate info, and passing that along, might be the best option.

Do you call the police on these occasions?

These jackwagons ruin it for everyone else. I was part of a group that leased some land up in NY, and the guys on the lease adjoining ours were clearly on our land during the week when we were not there. They pretty much viewed it as "theirs"

Would trail cameras help? If you hid them well enough, maybe you could catch pics of these trespassers without them knowing? If you had photo/video evidence, that would go a long way. Or even a photo when you confront them? Leave a camera phone running when you throw them off?

Maybe a Go Pro when you throw them off?

When you find them ask where they are parked so you don't "accidentally block them in". Locate their vehicle and remove the valve stems and leave them in a baggie on the windshield. Rinse repeat as needed.

If they are real jerks, I ask if I can hunt on their property in exchange for hunting on mine. They curse, I call the cops and they sometimes get a tresspass charge.

+1 on trail camera. Get some pictures of these morons and post them on trees With No Trespassing with there mug shot . They will get the hint.

I would try to hid a few game cams. If you get them tearing down your signs & driving their atvs all over the place you have them by the balls. also ask for their hunting licesnse so you know their not giving you a bs name. take a picture of them and keep a log so you can identify to the police/epo the people who are repeat offenders.

or put these signs up next time... http://www.mysecuritysign.com/Shooting-Range-Signs/Warning-Sign/SKU-K-7708.aspx

Time to start handing out some beatings. That usually works. I found a guy sitting in my ladder stand two years ago. I asked him what he was doing in my stand. He told me to go **** myself. So I assisted him out of the stand with a little help from gravity. Then I guided him back to his truck and offered to call him an ambulance. He decided to drive himself.
Never had another problem.

Here is how it goes everything I find someone out there....

Me: You are on private posted property, leave now and do not step foot on my land again.
Them: this is public land, this isn't yours, I have always hunted here, my friend/brother/third cousin said I could hunt here.
Me: What is your name? I am going to call the police and we can have this sorted out quickly.
them: F you, ##@&#!!, $#Q*&*@!!. And they walk off.

Keep in mind we both are holding guns, or bows during this conversation. I tend to be more polite than I should be when both parties are holding weapons.
Finding where they park (if they aren't dropped off) and taking the plate seems to be the best next step. Other than trying to physically detain someone while we are both armed, which is not a road I want to go down.

Do you have repeat offenders or different people every time?

One guy was repeat, and lived nearby. I asked around and got his name, had the police give him a written no trespass order. I'm pretty sure he is the one ripping down signs out of spite now.

You will be surprised how quick someone gets out of a stand when you show up with a chainsaw... But honestly stands I find - I would keep - and sling on ebay or at a pawn shop.

Trail cams to get pics of someone taking down signs is a good idea. So is opening the land to some friend sot hunt in exchange for patrolling and kicking out other hunters.

Next time don't ask them to leave - don't even engage them. Just call the EPO and let them give them the news. If someone is stupid or disrespectful enough to walk past a sign and ignore it - then they've got it coming to them.

Sorry to hear about the issues with these folks. I would go the cop or game warden route to see if they can help and also get up game cameras.

I have a farm in the next town over from me that I would love to hunt since it looks accessible for my wheelchair and scooter. Problem is I was never able to reach the owners to even ask permission so without that, it is as good as posted to me. I would not be stepping on anyone’s land like that unless I know it is open to hunting and damn sure not if it was posted.

The solution is easy:

Damn Fudds.

Serious question, I assume this is in MA? having hunted on private property with the land owner I have never had this happen?

All good points. Unfortunalty you have to be a prick. Once land is posted with no trespassing signs that are visable and conspicuous then people can be arrested or escorted off the property. If they are parking on your property have the cars towed. Tree stands confiscate. Find out where they are coming in. You might have to make a deal with the devil and let some guys hunt or ATv to keep other guys off the property. Others charge with trespassing and video them with your phone on your land. Summon some of these dicks to court and word will get out. Property law is very enforceable. The police might hate you for calling but I would imagine they would get so pissed they start locking people up. Problem solved.

Boghog1,

It is Mass "20 acres in southeastern mass".

So my guess is due to congestion there is limited hunting space available hence the reason for all those ignoring the signs.

Not that it makes it right, just trying to figure out why it is happening more there than south eastern NH. Also any hunters we did come across were very polite

"get off my land"
"no"
"BANG"

"what happened here?"
"I told him to get off my land, he started a fight over it and raised his shotgun at me, until I talk to a lawyer that's all I have to say".
