Remington 1911?

Tried the R1 this weekend.
Its a basic USGI style 1911 with decent walnut grips.
It came outta the box saturated in Rem-Oil,so I field stripped & ran a few patches down the barrel and wiped it down with a cloth.
The gun is fitted tight I used the barrel wrench (included) to free up the bushing spring.I fired 150rds of blazer brass & 50 rds. of remanufactured semi-wad cutters. The gun performed flawleesly with no issues. The first few mags were low & right (but I belive this was more operator error then the firearms).Eventually consistant 2" grouping @ almost 30'
(all centermass anyways)[laugh]
The trigger is pretty crisp, but a touch "Mushy" at the point of release...time will tell.
After expelling 150rds It was oozing oil out of its pours.I should have done a more extensive initial cleaning with solvents I think.
In all this is not a custom precision 1911 and I'm not a high end competitive shooter. The Remington R1 is fairly accurate however, and good value for less then $600.
For me it fills a no frills, utilitarian .45 shooter on a budget. This would make a good combat/personal defense, plinker,ATV gun.

In all good value, good shooter..can't go wrong.

Sounds like it was a good choice. My dealer is supposed to be getting one in...but so far no show.

Had the opportunity to handle a 1911 r1 today. Seemed nice. I have wanted a 1911 for a while, but the near 1k price tag bothers me..... So for around 600 I'm interested. Anyone have an idea who is actually making the parts? In Remington just importing low end parts and throwing this together?

I seriously doubt that Remington is manufacturing every single part that goes in ANY of their firearms, just like there is no mass manufacturer of anything anywhere that does so.

I guess I should have been more specific.....

Is the Remington essentially just a Auto Ordnance for $100 extra because it says remington on it? ( maybe the newer Auto Ordnance guns are ok, I have not seen one )

I certainly dont expect Remington to be making every part in their guns, nor do I care. My question was maybe directed to those that know about 1911's on the overall quality of it, seeing as how I have no clue

I am not a fan of using a bushing wrench to take down a pistol whose bushing doesn't want to turn easily. Usually this means a fitted bushing, and turning it with a wrench risks loosening the bushing fit. In the alternative, try the "set back" disassembly method:

Check pistol for unloaded.

Check again.

Rest butt of pistol on bench pad, with muzzle pointing just past your ear.

With left hand, push slide back about 3/4"

Now with right hand thumb, depress the recoil spring cap while using finger of left hand, try turning the bushing CC. It should move freely.

Don't get hit in the face by a flying spring cap.

I'm curious to know how the R1 fares wrt fit/finish...as much as the thought of a decent MA compliant 1911 has me wanting to run out and buy one sight unseen, I've read some pretty nasty reviews of the fit/finish of these guns.

I'd almost resigned myself to spending the extra $ on a Sig or S&W 1911 to be (more) assured I wouldn't regret it, but if my concerns about the Remington aren't well founded, then hey -- I'm all into saving a few bucks.

I've had my 1911R1 for a couple or three weeks now and put 250 rounds through it so far.
Functioning and accuracy are both good.
Winchester ball ammo goes into about 2-1/2" at 25 yards.
The fit and finish are quite satisfactory and the sights are very nice.
The barrel locks up into the slide without any play at all.
The two mags are very good quality.
The trigger pull is a bit long and mushy to suit me.
I will probably replace the sear rather than messing around with stoning the original.
I would recommend the 1911R1 to anyone as a very good deal.

I held one at the local gun shop this past weekend. As others have stated, fit and finish look good, gun feels tight and solid all around. I might pick one up in the near future.
