I have a 40 year old Remington 870 wingmaster with a 20" slug barrel, it holds 4+1 (2-3/4" shells). I'd like to add a mag extension for home defense purposes. Any recommendations? Also I've been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what the Mass. law is regarding capacity/legality of these aftermarket extended tubes.

As for MA laws, I believe you're ok since it's a pump shotty. I'm sure someone well versed with the MA laws will chime in.

Not so fast. There is the large capacity feeding device issue for mag extensions in pumpers. You'll have to do a search but it's been discussed before. Like all things MA, my recollections is that it's a gray area.

Which is why I said that someone that knows more would chime in. I sold an 870 that could fit 6 in the magazine (7 total with one in the chamber) without issue. The stupid FFL (Blackwater) wouldn't transfer it into MA with the adjustable stock (didn't tell them it was the higher capacity version).
Anyway, look up the MA laws to be sure you're not going to get buggered over it. Still, I think going to a 6 shot magazine will still be fine, even in MA. Then again, who knows with the new stupidity they keep passing down there.

As far as I can see there isn't a problem with buying a shotgun with the extended mag. I see them them all the time in gun shops. The gray area to me is the law about adding an extended mag to my shotgun. Is this like adding a 13 round mag to my pistol. ie preban/ post ban and all that other bs

If a post-ban magazine holds more than 5 shotgun shells it's technically illegal, regardless of whether it's attached to a pump gun, semi auto, or even no gun. The magazine itself is illegal according to the actual law:

https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXX/Chapter140/Section121
“Large capacity feeding device”, (i) a fixed or detachable magazine, box, drum, feed strip or similar device capable of accepting, or that can be readily converted to accept, more than ten rounds of ammunition or more than five shotgun shells; or (ii) a large capacity ammunition feeding device as defined in the federal Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, 18 U.S.C. section 921(a)(31) as appearing in such section on September 13, 1994. The term “large capacity feeding device” shall not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with,.22 caliber ammunition.

https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXX/Chapter140/Section131M
Section 131M. No person shall sell, offer for sale, transfer or possess an assault weapon or a large capacity feeding device that was not otherwise lawfully possessed on September 13, 1994. Whoever not being licensed under the provisions of section 122 violates the provisions of this section shall be punished, for a first offense, by a fine of not less than $1,000 nor more than $10,000 or by imprisonment for not less than one year nor more than ten years, or by both such fine and imprisonment, and for a second offense, by a fine of not less than $5,000 nor more than $15,000 or by imprisonment for not less than five years nor more than 15 years, or by both such fine and imprisonment.

The provisions of this section shall not apply to: (i) the possession by a law enforcement officer for purposes of law enforcement; or (ii) the possession by an individual who is retired from service with a law enforcement agency and is not otherwise prohibited from receiving such a weapon or feeding device from such agency upon retirement.

With that said, it doesn't appear that this particular law is (currently) enforced in MA when the LCFD is attached to a pump shotgun.
