I found this on a message board and now That I have a 700 I dont like what the posts are saying.

Did anyone see the special on TV the other night about the issues with the Remington Model 700 firing without someone pulling the trigger. Multiple sources had voiced complaints, and it seems as though Remington will not admit there is an issue although they have settled several legal battles out of court dealing with cases of injuries that were allegedly due to misfires. They spoke with the gun's developer and other gun experts who gave differing opinions about the reasoning for the misfires.

Have you had any problems with your 700?

This came up in a post here quite a while ago. I tried to search for it but couldn't find it.

I had it happen to me with my 30-06 three or four years ago.
On the older 700's(pre '82) you had to release the safety in order to unlock and open the bolt to unload.
I was about to come out of the woods after a day of hunting and flicked the safety off to unload and BOOM!

Scarred the shit out of me.

Turns out, I wasn’t the only one this has happened to. I found that Remington offered a Safety Modification Program.
Sent it in, had the mod done and haven’t had a problem since. All the other issues I have seen or heard of have been with someone who has messed with the trigger. Not sayin’ there haven’t been issues when someone hasn’t messed with the trigger, just the ones I have seen/heard of.

Biggest thing with me is, if you follow the safety rules, you might have an AD but nobody will get hurt.

EDIT: Found it...

The MSNBC report was an example of journalism at its worst. The gun is fine.

Im not a fan of journalism from MSNBC but I am intrested is post like this:
I have owned my Model 700, .270 for over 20 years. Was a gift, brand new. I have never modified the trigger or anything else for that matter. For the first time, my gun misfired this deer season, after shooting a deer opening morning, my safety stuck in the "fire" position. After opening bolt, was able to move to "Safe" position and chamber another round. When I checked safety functionality and moved to "fire" (with muzzle pointed toward ground) the gun fired with my finger no where near the trigger. Very scary. Thinking I had lost my mind, I repeated the process, and it happened again.

It's also possible he neglected his 20 year old gun and the action became a rusted mess, just like the woman on the MSNBC documentary who shot her kid. Maybe he did an action job at home and lied about it.

I had this happen to me on a couple of 700s but only after I adjusted the trigger to fire in the under 1 lb range. Never had this problem in one I didn't tinker with.

This is old news, now in a media driven frenzy. If mSNBC is involved you can belive its not true. Probably caused by poor/improper maintenance/modification. Or global warming. Get a Jewel trigger and you won't have to think about it anymore.

I guess there is only one thing I can do. I will try to get my 700 to fire without touching the trigger. O Great! now I need to go back to the range with all my gear and go shooting darn it all!! [wink]

I recall reading that, to respond to the "media frenzy," justified or otherwise, Remington was replacing triggers on old 700s (the new X-Mark, I think).

Do you have a new 700? This was only an issue with older (pre 82, I think someone said) models.

Read this thread. It's a real issue, and the bottom line is that fiddling with the safety or just running the bolt can result in the gun firing under certain conditions (particularly if the trigger has been adjusted to a light pull). Basic firearms safety, as always, goes a long way to addressing the problem.

The man I traded with said he got the gun new back in 2005.

You should be able to determine the age by the serial number. If there's not an online listing of manufacture dates, you can contract Remington directly.

You should also be able to tell on your own if it has the Xmark trigger.

Thank you Tony I will look into it.
