RV living

RVs are the worst "investment" ever, and I currently have one (my third), I'm a glutton for punishment and throwing money away.
not if you are using it.

I lived full time in mine for the last 4 years! Got to see most of this country, the only reason I just bought a house in Vegas is that this entire country is messed up right now, most people dont want you around if you have been traveling!

I will tell you from my experience of owning trailers , and doing insurance claims on RV's, the roofs are the week point and when they leak it is a HUGE repair problem.... either rotting wood and or mold, in addition to damaged inside trim. I used to total trailers rather than try to repair them

Most of the water leaks are self inflicted because owners have no idea how to inspect and maintain them.

I rebuilt the floor in a 19’ travel trailer. What a bitch. Never ever again.

They are generally poorly built from the factory and going down the road at highway speeds causes everything to flex. Without a doubt the construction has gotten much worse with COVID

I will say that I wish I still had my 2018 Rockwood. All things considered it was a good unit and didn’t give me any trouble.

I bought a 2018 Thor brand new, POS! I traded it in and got a 2008 Fleetwood, built like a brick S house! Do your homework before you buy.

Getting a lemon like that sucks as the lemon law doesn’t apply to RV’s.

We are in the process of upgrading to a 5th wheel which will be our fourth camper. We are very much leaning towards a used one. Once the new tow vehicle comes in we will start looking for the trailer.

our only issue with an old one was some parks have a 10 year old or newer clause for staying long term. We would occasionally stay at places we likes for a couple months.

We tend to wander to new places. A week here and a week or two there. We have been staying close to home as our parents have some health issues.

I'm full timing in a Class A right now after 18 months in a travel trailer. It will go traveling with me throughout the winter, including all ski resorts north. After home ownership over 16 years I wanted to try it now while I was younger and healthy instead of it being a retirement thing where one fall down the entry stairs could result in a busted hip and being lights out for a while. Bought it used from a private party and it has an extended warranty on it through 2024.

Does anyone actually bother to make well insulated RVs? It seems to appear that most of them either leak like a sieve ...
Back in the day, a trailer was a steel frame platform,
supporting lath studs,
supporting sheet aluminum body panels screwed into the studs,
sealed by torquing extruded aluminum edge trim and butt joints
onto stale coax seal.

Not even the kind of curing silicone seal that they'd sell
in card-mounted toothpaste-sized tubes
on shelf edge pegs at the A&P; the kind where there's
an oversized chocolate-chip shaped sample of sealant on the card
that you could go sproing-sproing-sproing on the cowlick
sticking out of the dollop.
s-l300.jpg

No; that would be the good stuff.

I mean the kind of gray coax seal that transmogrifies into
an amorphous lump that picks up soot and pollen
like a soot and pollen magnet.

Kneel on the roof's aluminum roof panel
hard enough to produce a gap in the coax seal,
and it ain't healing itself.

In 2021 I'm sure that Apollo-program advances in caulking science
have been more than made up for by the factory hiring
elite assembly line workers who are just biding their time
until they can go back to cooking meth in grandma's chicken coop.

Oh, and I'm serious about wood studs for the walls.

... or are designed for warmer climates.
It's not nearly as popular to camp while skiing, etc.

It doesnt help that gas is average 4.09 out here :(
IIRC, the Gas Crisis killed the mid-70's RV boom.

That and the fact that no one will work on them is why we are putting our Class A 37ft gasser up for sale. We had an amazing summer driving around, but it's just too expensive right now. I've learned quite a bit because I had to do my own repairs, so I'm kind of grateful for that, but I'm done.

InTech RV's are getting larger. They started as a well known vehicle hauler that is well used in NASCAR. A few years back they got in to tiny hatch back style rvs. Now some are getting to be good sized. All aluminum. I'd give them a look when it comes to it. Best of luck. Matt

Thanks for the recommendation.

Whoa whoa there skinflinty, what happens in Vegas…

I can't see spending big bucks for a luxury hotel room, especially while in Vegas, because you don't spend much time in the room except for when you sleep and shower.
Most of your waking hours are spent out and about, at casinos, shows, restaurants or other attractions and events.

$50 bucks a day for an RV spot in a cramped camping area ???
I've stayed in Vegas hotel rooms that cost less than that.
Back in the 60's and 70's you could get a room for $50.00 but they started charging more in the 80's and beyond. Last time I spent time in Vegas in 2006 I spent $180.00 a night at the MGM.
Rooms were basically free for the "high rollers" but I never was one. I went there for work related conferences.

Remember, RVers:
When answering a phone while behind the wheel,
don't be tempted to touch your phone during the call.

Move the phone way across the cockpit,
and jam buds in both ears for safety.

I don't think this is legal for the same reason it's illegal to wear headphones while driving.
One ear must remain unobstructed of listening devices so you can hear vehicle horns, train whistles, railroad crossing bells, drawbridge warnings and emergency vehicle sirens.

And on the subject of RV's, this just in:

Egg-zactly.

And I wouldn't assume a cop will give you a mulligan
if you only have one ear obstructed.

I'm not saying that normal phone volume levels
totally blank out road noise like horns and screeching tires.
(Playing loud music might do that).

I can believe that it might have a distraction factor.
At least enough that I'm too bored to debate that idea.

But wearing ear buds to take a phone call while driving
strikes me as peak idiocy.

And God help you if you get caught wearing them during an accident,
even if they didn't contribute at all.

And on the subject of RV's, this just in:

83-yo driver with 93-yo passenger.
Way to impress the ladies.
That RV ain't gonna buff out.
Sigh.

On the headphones, you'd be surprised. Matt

See which states lack leniency below:

Alaska: “Headphones and earbuds are not permitted, except when used for navigational purposes. Hearing aids OK.”
Arizona: “It's legal, though not for school bus drivers or anyone transporting children for a daycare facility.”
California: “Headphones and earbuds illegal, and that includes bicycles too. The only exception is for hearing aids, and to protect against 'injurious' noise levels.”
Colorado: “Headphones or earbuds covering both ears is prohibited, except for audio systems built into motorcycle helmets. Earpieces in one ear are permitted, for example for speaking on a phone.”
Florida: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving. Hearing aids are exempt.”
Georgia: “Anything that diminishes hearing or sight while driving is prohibited. Though earpieces used for communication purposes are permitted.”
Illinois: “Headphones or earbuds covering both ears are not permitted. The exceptions are motorcycle helmet audio systems, and one-ear headsets and earpieces.”
Louisiana: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving. Headphones built into motorcycle helmets exempt.”
Maryland: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving. Hearing aids are exempt.”
Massachusetts: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving, unless they are involved in the control of the vehicle itself.”
Minnesota: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving. Hearing aids are exempt.”
New York: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving.”
Ohio: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving. Headphones built into motorcycle helmets exempt, as are hearing aids.”
Oregon: “It's legal, but there are some regional exceptions (so check your local laws).”
Pennsylvania: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving. Single-ear audio systems for cellular communication OK, as are hearing aids.”
Rhode Island: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving or operating a bicycle.”
Virginia: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving. Headphones built into motorcycle helmets exempt, as are hearing aids.”
Washington: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving. Hands-free wireless communication systems and motorcycle helmet audio systems are OK.”

When I was investigating the possibility of buying an RV a few years back, I dont recall ever reading anything but complaints about Thor.

Fort Myers Beach off the island and nowhere close to the beach, 20 nights, close to $1600 dollars for 20 nights

Want to be on the beach? OFF SEASON it is about $2000/ month, in season there are no monthly sites but weekly sites are $600 to $900 a week

I'm starting to think I took the wrong career path. Buy land, install utilities, hire out most of the maintenance, then sit back and make money and enjoy the FL weather. The type of people that can afford prices like that means I probably wouldn't have to hire a bouncer or put the local police on speed-dial.

On the headphones, you'd be surprised.
(Of course police in all 57 states reserve the right
to jack you up for "distracted driving"
regardless of what the actual laws state).

Massachusetts: “Headphones or earbuds prohibited while driving, unless they are involved in the control of the vehicle itself.”
Massachusetts, LOL.

Enable voice-commands in Android Auto/CarPlay,
and use earbuds with microphones.

Hey, man - I was controlling my car.

FTFY.

Knew a guy (Roy) who had a good paying job in Fairfax, VA and a home in southern PA. For almost 30 years, he rented a room local to the job and went home on weekends... If Roy could do it, so could the OP...
