Yet another question of which one? I have been looking to get a bolt gun and start shooting longer distance (over 300 yards). I think I have narrowed the search to 2 rifles in .308 cal. though I am sure someone will throw a wrench in that and confuse me all over again[thinking]. Well I am looking at either a Savage model 10PC of a Remington LTR. Before anyone starts about the barrel length due to the lack of long distance ranges I can never see myself needing anything longer than 20 inch. That length is perfectly capable at shooting out to the 600 yards I never see myself going over.

The 2 rifles are very similar in many areas. Both have 20 inch heavy barrels. The Savage is half a pound lighter than the Remington. I really like that the savage has a detachable magazine and that it comes with a "tactical" style bolt handle. Both stocks are very similar Savage advertises "accu-stock" which I do like a little more than the Remingtons which seams a little slippery but is bedded. The Savage also has the adjustable accu-trigger. I know all of the things one may have and the other may not can be added of changed I am just talking out of the box. Both prices are also reasonably close. The only thing really different is the barrel twists Savage has a 1:10 and Remington 1:12

In the beginning I was just going to get the 700 but took a look at the Savage and was liking what I saw. I know you cant go wrong with the 700 and I have one in .30.06 for a hunting rifle but figured I would ask peoples thoughts.

It sounds like your preference is towards the Savage. I doubt that you would be disapointed with either one but I would lean towards the Savage.

Savage:

* The reviews of the Accutrigger are consistent. It's the best factory trigger out there.
* For a long time now Savage has had some of the best, if not the best out of the box accuracy of any factory rifle.

20" is just fine for long range work. 1:12" is OK for 600yrds, but marginal for longer range work. When I was competing at 1,000yrds we all used the Sierra 175g MK. A 1:12 twist didn't always keep the bullet stable out to 1,000yrds. I shot a 21" barrel with 1:10" twist and even my slower loads were stable at 1,000yrds. Go for the 10" twist and you'll be able to use the longer, lower drag bullets.

so subscribed to this; Sunday had a great day @ the range (SRGC) with a bunch of friends, and someone there offered to let me shoot their 700 in 30/06. First time I shoot a rifle (aside from my M&P15 .22cal), first time I shoot a 30/06. I'm in love. He had a trigger job done to it, and he smiled wide when I commented how crisp it felt.

I want a rifle bad now, in for the comments.

I am going to have to check out the bolts on the two a little closer now I know they were both smooth but will have to investigate this a little closer. I was definitely leaning towards the Savage but having a 700 already I know I can't go wrong with one of them also. If the actions are both nice and smooth I might have to go with the Savage.

Well I did it... I am now the proud owner of a Remington 700 LTR. Upon closer inspection the bolt on the LTR was a lot smother and easier to operate one handed. I did really like the Savage and had the bolt been a little smother I would have bought that someday I will surly have to add one to my collection. Maybe I will post some pics of my new toy when I get it put together. Now what t do for a scope? i am gonna throw a cheepy on it for now till I can get a good one.

If you don't mind telling me, where did you buy it and how much did you pay?
