Hi all I just picked up A .17 HMR rifle and put a simmons 40mm 3-9 scope on it. Just wanted to share that this rifle is like shooting a laser beam holy hell this thing is accurate. With ammo being expensive as it is. If you want a fun inexpensive rifle to plink and hunt varments with, that has more umfff to it then a .22 LR or MAG. This is a fun new toy to bring home. And average price for 50rds is 12-16 a box. Can't wait to get to some farm land and test it out on some pests. My buddy has the bull barrel version (which got me interested in the cartridge). Has taken out varments out to 200yards, pretty impressive for a rimfire.

I have a Savage .17 HMR with a bull barrel and sweet 17 scope. Nice rifle i have only shot it a few times. It is not even broken it. I trying to sell it.

I have a Mossberg, wish I had the $$$ for a Savage. But it's still accurate enough, and levels anything under 40lbs. Sounds like a nice little rig you have. Find some woodchucks or squirrels and you will have a blast. I like the ballistic tips better than the hollow points, but that is only me. Either of them work well enough.

I have only punched paper with it so far. But from what I have seen this thing do to ground squirrls on you tube it puts a smile on my face. I did not go with the heavy barrel version, cause for how small the bullet is the standard barrel looked plenty thick enough. I dont need 300yard accuracy cause I dont ever plan on shooting that far with this thing. Plus its a nice rifle for my young boys to practice with. I moved further up north west from where i was in NH. Now when I stop at a store the sign in the front says. Deer and turkey registration, Cold beer. And rifle ammo behind the register. I am going to like it here lol.

hmmmm, interesting

i'm in the market for another tac driver. here are my thoughts:

.308 Savage 10FP
.22LR Savage Mk II - a nice one w / bull barrel and accutrigger

or maybe a pistol in .22LR (Ruger Mk II, III or Sig Mosquito)

anyway, Savage is for me, i have a 10FP in .223 that I've deck'd out.

[angry2] now you've gone and threw a monkey wrench into my game plan!

*off i go to look up .17hmr ballistics*

a-hole! [wink]

If you go on ballistics alone the .17 hands down kills the .22 LR. Even better then the .22 MAG. Only down side its a very light bullet. Thats why I bought it so when I am plinking, or doing some small game hunting I just gotta make sure my gun has more power then my sons lol. And the .17 tends to be more accurate then the .22

I sold an early production 93R17 on here a while back to fund a thumbhole Savage with accu trigger. So far its as accurate as the 93 I sold but I'm gonna order a Mueller APV scope and ditch the BSA Sweet 17 I have on it.
BSA's scopes are marketed for this round but are absolute crap when dialed in past 10x!

My only problem with the Savage I have now is that the thumbhole stock doesn't feel as comfy as it should. Cheek weld is great but the grip is a little wide so I'm thinking about reworking it with a Dremel until I get it feeling more like a Dragunov style stock and less like a pre ban sporter.

Well I took it out to the back yard range yesterday with my buddy. He has the lam stock bull barrel Savage accu trigger. And I have plain barrel syn stock w the accu trigger. The yardage we were shooting at was about 75 yards. He had a 50mm Simmons, and mine is a 40mm 8 point Simmons. At that range there was no noticable difference in accuracy. We were both using CCI V max ammo. When I did my part I could keep a 5 shot string about the size of a dime at that range. But most of the time I had one flier. This little rifle is definetly the most accurate out of the box rifle I have ever owned. Even the NM M-14 I use to have (sniff sniff) could not touch this thing accuracy wise, within 100 yards

Something to think about... .17 ammo is relatively expensive compared to .22. Last I saw it was $.25-$.30 per round. I have a buddy that shoots it and he has had a bit of a hard time finding it a few months ago.

Best,

Rich

Thinking squirrel season, I picked up a Savage 93R17 with SS bull barrel and thumbhole stock at Dick's Friday, along with a BSA Sweet 17 3-9x40 and adjustable windage rings. I didn't notice the windage drum on the scope was fake until I got it home.

So I mounted the scope and used a Leupold Boresighter to set the scope to near zero, or so I thought. The Leupold has worked fine on all rifles thus far, but the BSA scope was a foot low and right. The turret didn't seem to work well at all in adjusting vertically and trying to adjust windage with adjustable rings wasn't working well either.

Chalk it up to hoping a $60 POS scope MIGHT be decent.

Do all the Sweet 17 scopes have fake windage drums? I'll confess I bought another 4-12x40 BSA Sweet 17 scope online for $120 as the pic showed left and right drums - hopefully not both fake. The things you do after the 3rd gin & tonic...
