Seen any Mosin Nagants lately?

Theres many places to read about corrosive ammo, the link above is one of them. Windex works good. Cleaning up after using corrosive ammo is not a big deal ( especially in a bolt gun like the Nagant ) but you just need to make sure it gets done!

Yes, there are plenty of new MFG non corrosive ammo, but lost of guys just shoot the corrosive stuff as is usually MUCH cheaper!

Accuracy and service life of a barrel etc.

Thanks for the info DRB! I was curious of the price point of corrosive ammo.

Service life of barrel? if you take care of corrosive ammo clean up properly service life is more rounds than your shoulder will take! Remember these are military equipment that are already 70+ years old. I can promise you you wont shoot out a barrel!

Accuracy= the sum of all moving parts. If you have a decent barrel, good marksmanship skills, and some quality ammo it will shoot well. Keep in mind though it was designed as a battle rifle, and not a target rifle

Alright boys and girls, time for me to clean my first Mosin. I've got my bolt assembly(disassembled) along with my magazine, mag spring, screws, etc, soaking in mineral spirits. My stock seems to be absolutely covered in cosmoline, to the point where I could barely remove the rings holding the barrel to the stock.

Now... I have seen all the videos about leaving the stock out in the sun, leaving it in a car while covered in paper towels (in the sun), boiling water and steaming it, using slight mineral spirits and wiping it down. Yadda yadda yadda. My question to you NES'ers is, what has worked best and easiest for you with the stock? Additionally, what about the barrel? I have never owned a rifle before this, but I bought Hoppe's #9 as well as a .30 cal bore brush. Try to soak it with mineral spirits and then clean it with Hoppe's as you would a pistol?

I boiled water in a large frying pan and held the stock in the steam - working on one area at a time. I think you've got it right for the barrel, but I would also suggest getting a 20 gauge brush for the chamber. If you leave any cosmo in the chamber then you might find yourself unable to extract rounds.

Just wait until your Mosin meets another Mosin. Next thing you know they will be sprouting up in your house like rabbits. the bottom line is this. Mosins are cheap. the ammo is cheap. They shoot 2 - 3 " groups at 100 yards usually. I have at least one Finn Mosin that will do 1" groups off a bench. My Russian Sniper is a tackdriver. They are simple to clean. Use Pine-Sol for a better smelling solution than Windex. Kerosene works best for cleaning the cosmoline off the rifle. Take the whole gun apart to clean it. Oil it all up while putting it back together. Enjoy your newly acquired Mosin, but beware, they do multiple like rabbits.

I see how these can be adicting. Way more fun to shoot than my AR and cheaper to shoot!

I don't know why people bitch/worry about the 'corrosive' primers. Peice of cake to clean when done! Just like brushing your teeth after eating. Unless you only brush once a week?[smile]
