I was stationed 4th US Army field station In Asmara Ethiopia.
We used Teletype equipment and I guess thats all I can say.

Derek, just a note, Jim is an old school guy and the President at Sippican Rod and Gun Club in Rochester. I've heard some great milsurp stories from lots of the higher ups and members there, plus stories of scores that would make us all sick with envy. Namely one High Standard eh Jim?
Thats one of the things that keeps my interest to stay late on those meeting nights. [laugh]
Note.. this is also a plug that you should come down for the October Pumpkin shoot so folks can meet our fearless leader.[wink]

Berlin! that sounds like good duty. I was in East Africa, some people
think we had it bad but we had some great hunting areas.
When we were off duty we could go out in the brush. I knew the area
so I was assigned as a guide to other troops who wanted to go hunting.

I was stationed at US Army Field Station Sinop, Turkey...but that was after the ASA was integrated with all the other intelligence components into one MI branch (later MI Corps). We had MOD 40 teletypes which stayed in the inventory a long time. I worked with a lot of people who had been ASA, many of whom served in Asmara. I heard a lot of stories about that place.

I was in downtown Leominster attending the annual street fair, where I saw a guy with an ASA cap on. There are still a few of you walking around...with the "Lighting Fast Chicken Plucker" insignia on caps and t-shirts.

Thank you for your service.

Mark L.

Berlin was a good place to be stationed. Augsburg probably would be considered the best. A little more freedom. Your duty station doesn't sound to bad either. Then again I always make the best of where ever I am at. Now Mark Sunny Sinop was not any place any one of us ever wanted to end up at. [laugh] [wink] We always figured you really had to piss some one off to end up there.[wink] [laugh]

Mark056.
Don't tell all the stories you heard about Asmara. I was only in Turkey for about a week and I flew out on a c47 just to get out their.

Spent two years in Berlin pre wall coming down. Great city, good and bad memories.

Our time was also before the wall came down. Can't say too many bad memories of there but we worked weird hours anyways. We made the best of it.T-berg was my second home. [laugh] Can't tell you how many double shifts I worked.[shocked][laugh]
There was alot to do and see though, and all kinds of different foods to try along with the beer.[grin]

Ah yes, the beer was good for sure, and good food too. Schweinebraten - my fav pork roast.

Right outside of Andrews we had Tony's Imbiss, and Al Mulinos . Tony's for Brats and such, and Al's for really great italian food.
Ka da we there was an excellent chinese restaurant, and it was not Americanized chinese.
Our food on the hill was so bad, most times, that Al's or Tony's is what I would hit after a swing shift.[laugh] Thank god they would stay open until the last trick bus was down from the hill.[grin]

Retired as a CW3 after 30 years with both the USAR and RIARNG. Bulk of time was as a CID SA looking into white-collar crime....POL points, Officers Clubs, NCO Clubs, Food Service Accounting, Payroll Fraud, Installation Security, etc. Was very interesting....to say the least. [wink]

I served in the US army (infantry) 10th Mountain from 2000-2003 active, reserve untill June 2008. One trip overseas to A-stan.

I was a Jarhead. This is me somewhere in the Omani desert just before Desert Shield became Desert Storm. About 18 years (and pounds) ago.

Of course, my daughter fits my old uni better than me these days.
