Steel Challenge

Never had any issues with the MkII. I can't even remember a stovepipe with that pistol. Pretty much a Timex- not pricey but keeps ticking.
I have an original 22/45 (MKII). Replaced trigger with Volquartson decades ago. A few years ago I splurged and put a Volquartson upper on it....so nice...and the comp eliminates the ferocious muzzle flip of my CCI mini mags 😀

LOL ferocious muzzle flip. Though I shouldn't talk smack- this is me shooting an AR with a CMMG 22LR conversion and binary trigger:

OK, not really.

I think we call those Cmore railway 'old fashioned ' now. I have a few and have no reason to change them out

They are super popular. However, I have to remember to turn it off asap. Battery lasts a day or two at best.

Not the best these days. But they are ok.

I got it at wholesale and have a 12moa dot in it specifically for steel challenge

Prob should have stuck with 3 moa.

Looks like the appropriate thread to bump. @Broc Tuah @chris_1001 and anyone else with advice, here's the background:

A very good friend of mine down south is an officer on the county chamber of commerce and CEO of a decent size company. His company as well as the chamber host steel challenge matches. I've had an open invitation and today was asked to join the fun at a specific event this summer. So where to begin? Assuming I don't know jack would be correct. [laugh]

Appropriate (I think) guns I could shoot are Glock 35 converted to 9mm w/ a trigger job, Canik Mete SFX, Ruger Mark III, Sig P322, or a couple choices of single stack 1911's in 45ACP. All are iron sights except the Canik which has a Holosun. I compete regularly with rifles but not with pistols, though I did very well in my first pin shoot believe it or not with a RIA 1911. Seems like one of the above would do well, but I'm going to need a holster, correct? The Canik comes with a holster but I haven't tried it yet. I'll need 5 mags, correct?

I'm only 'bi curious' regarding pistol competitions but do want to practice a little so I don't completely suck. I'd do a few for fun but will generally stick to my rifle schedule. One of my clubs has a lot of steel and the one very close has a little. Any advice for practice? Might try a match if somewhere close to central Mass.

Totally OK to tell me there is no choice but to find a Staccato even for the occasional fun match. [smile]
You can shoot anything you are comfortable with in Steel Challenge.

I recommend at least a trigger job and try to stick to lighter shooting calibers like 9mm, maybe load down a bit if your gun will work.

Come to one of the Copicut shoots when it starts again. Drinks at Barrets (Bridgewater) after.

I should definitely make one of these matches. Maybe same for others but a big thing for me is simply knowing the format and procedures so I can be prepared and not have a C-F going on before I even pull a trigger.

Sometime this year I'd like to host a 'lite' version of Steel Challenge at my primary club. There have been some requests for timed pistol events but we don't have the physical set up nor would we have the personnel to run IPSC, IDPA, etc. Steel Challenge seems very do-able with more limited facilities and people.

Does the club have any steel? Falling or static? Plate rack (s)?
A pet peeve is when a home grown generic steel plate match is advertised as 'steel challenge ' --that name should be reserved to a sanctioned match with official stages
It's not much work to run a basic steel match. It could be head to head with two plate racks. Or a larger array of falling and/or static plates that each shooter makes a timed run, or several runs. And are a great way for newer shooters to get their toes wet in competition

Copicut is the most beginner friendly match because the RSO and everyone involved are great.

It is just a great group of people.

@zmd first match was there. We all helped him out a ton, including letting him shoot additional stages with different guns so he could try them. It is just a great group of people that want to help.

The guys that got SC going at Copicut are at every shoot. Come to a match this spring and they can give you a hand with how to get it going at your local club.

This ^

Best place to give it a try, very laidback crowd. A few first timers have gone there to get their start.

LOL no, I wouldn't be advertising it as Steel Challenge unless it actually was. That would be a while and would take a volunteer or two to step up. Have my hands full enough with other range commitments and overall supervision. I do want to run an intro using Steel Challenge guidelines for fun and to see if it sticks.

Every Steel Challenge I've ever been to has been incredibly laid back. Watching two or three shooters before its your turn is generally more than enough to get a good feel for how things are run.

Show up with a gun, magazines, ammo, and a good attitude. The guys that have the most fun there show up for the ball busting.

LOL love the new avatar!

Made a couple mods to my Mark II that I thought was a Mark III. Mark III frame now allows me to send mags flying at will. I definitely have a 'thing' for the black and orange Volquartsen laminated grips but those are on backorder so Volthane for now. Red dots are for old blind people and pussies [devil] so I installed a set of Williams fiber optic sights w/ the rear ghost ring. Glad I spent the money for a proper brass dovetail drift as the rear sight was a bit of a bitch to swap.

I always hated the stupid mag catch on the Mark II as well as the front sight that did double duty as a grappling hook. If I wanted to bring this back to original configuration I'd at least keep the new sights.

You are so ready to go. Just need 5+ mags, a bag. A chamber flag and a thick skin!!!

No need for fast mag changes, And at close ranges the sights are a suggestion lol.
