Taurus 1911

I personally would like to hear from someone that has OWNED a Taurus 1911 to give a report on it. No offense to anyone, but these guns seem to get a really bad rap, and I truly believe that someone has had a bad experience with them, but I, and others, want to hear it from them.

Once again, I don't intend to insult or offend.

Tim

Actually, I have read three reports from various magazines, and while one gave an F, others gave higher.

I suppose I am just looking for a few owners on this board, who aren't ashamed to admit to it, to come forward and give their results. I'm not downplaying the actual testing done by the pro's, but looking at every single aspect.

Good Lord, and I'm not even the one interested.....................

I don't own one, but I have shot my friend's a fairly good amount. It shoots well, he's never had a problem and it does it's job. The fit and finish aren't as nice as some other 1911's but then again the price isn't up there either.

I don't know, maybe I should've learned a lesson about "inexpensive" guns after my Keltec experience(which I still do not have back...)

Bingo. Learning from our mistakes can only help us [smile]

However... if you have lots of disposable income... I say what the hell... buy one. You've got nothing to lose. But if you have to be smart with your money... well... then be smart with your money [wink]

I don't think it matters much if someone who actually owns a Taurus 1911 speaks up. Even if they are happy with theirs. There are so many people that are unhappy with their Taurus 1911's that that alone should be good enough as a deciding factor.

Are there people that are happy with their Auto Ordnance 1911's? Sure. But there are TONS of people (on NES alone even!) that are very unhappy with their AO 1911's too. Enough for many to stay away. Taurus seems to be the same.

I haven't heard a Taurus 1911 owner say a negative thing about them. I have heard a whole bunch of people that don't own one talk about how nobody should own one, but the actual owner reports have been favorable. Is it even available in MA?

By higher do you mean a D or C grade? The highest I think I've read gives it a C-. While the price is cheap, not in MA, I don't think a C- gun is a good purchase. For a little more you can get a B+ or better 1911.

I hear what the OP is asking in that he want's a first hand opinion, but it could be that he knows of one for sale at a good price and he's trying to convince himself to take the plung. If any reputable gun rag gives a gun an F, that is usually enough for me to stay away.

Several dealers, including Four Seasons, rate Taurus customer service as quite poor. One guy at my club has a Taurus 1911 and says it shoots "OK" at best. He prchased it for the novelty factor of it not being available in MA. For $700, I'd look for a new S&W "low end" 1911 or a used "mid-range" S&W 1911. S&W really is the best choice in the sub $1K 1911 market here in MA.

Chris

Are there some other alternatives in the sub 1k 1911 market, since I live in CT?

btw: I'm planning my buys for next year, which will likely be a 1911 and a Ruger Mini14

Since we're on the 1911 subject, does anyone know if there are any steel framed 1911's available with rails other than Para-Ordnance in MA?

It's pretty much just Para-Ordnance and S&W in MA as far as 1911's go, huh?

Hardly. [rolleyes]

Neither Para nor S&W were the first to get on the AFR; neither has a 1911 on the target roster (NO, a 5906, however tarted up, is not a 1911!).

SVI was the first to place a 1911 on both the AFR and the target roster; it has the only 1911 on the latter. You can get an SVI w/a rail if you want it, in steel, aluminum or titanium.

Bring money.

Bring more money.

For titanium, bring friends with money. [wink]

No, but the original poster is from CT. So it probably available to him.

If you bothered to read carefully, post #17 specifically asks about an all steel 1911 with rails other than Para. You're not the only intelligent person around here, Scrive. And you perilously close to overuse of the "rolling eyes" smiley. Used more sparingly, it would have greater effect. [wink]

And yet, S&W was previously and specifically cited as a source for that very platform.

Xak was asking about a 1911 with rails, which was not mentioned ANYWHERE else in this thread. I suggested S&W and posted a link.

Try, "Oh, I'm sorry, I was wrong. I did not realize the question was regarding a specific type of 1911 with rails." Continuing to argue a point when you've made a mistake is juvenile.

We are also all aware of your affinity for SVI, as you mention it at every opportunity. What significance does SVI's inclusion on the target roster have anyway?

OK Mods, I'm finished here and will end this OT discussion. Thanks.

To the OP, do yourself a favor and avoid Taurus. Plenty of other options abound for you in the 1911 department especially in CT.

Wrong. Read Posts 3 and 14, each of which expressly referred the OP to S&W.

Try, "Oh, I'm sorry, I was wrong.

Try applying the RTFD program.

As those who actually read and comprehended my post were able to grasp, a poster stated that Para and S&W were the only 1911's available in MA. As my post showed, that assertion was and is wrong.

This nosedived quick......I'm in the market also for a 1911.. SA is attractive, but my love affair with S&W wheelguns has me leaning toward the S&W 1911.
Those that own S&W 1911'S, why did you finally opt for them, other than restriction options?

Thanx for the link. Didn't know S&W had all steel railed 1911s. Hope I can get them in MA. Been looking into getting a big, heavy, light railed pistol in either .45 or .357Sig for my bedside safe. Home defense and range type gun. I love the PARA Ordinance LDA trigger, but HATE the long reset. Would trust S&W in single stack over Para any day.

Shotgun is too big, cumbersome and hard to secure under the bed.

If I were the OP and really wanted Taurus I would go with their 24/7 line of pistols. Only assuming they are reliable, accurate, and have a nice trigger. They are my wet dream for a combat/HD pistol. I would love to drop a custom 5.5" .357Sig barrel in their 15+1 .40 caliber pistol. Talk about firepower. I live in MA so it won't happen for me anytime soon.

I purchased my several Smith and Wesson 1911 pistols because they are well made, very tight, accurate, reliable, reasonable priced, and have that intangible "quality" feel that I've found lacking in other models of 1911 such as Auto Ordnance and Para. The outstanding S&W service policy is an added bonus.

Thanx for the link.

You're welcome.

Executive,

I have been looking at 1911 style guns. I have a tough time dealing with the almost 75% greater cost in .45 over .40 cal ammo. Para makes a 1911 double stack in .40, so my quesiton is what are the issues with the Para 1911?
