The technical term for the 'sharpnel' coming from a plate when hit by a bullet

For the life of me, I can't find the dam technical term for this and it's been bugging me all day. It's basically the plate itself firing pieces of itself outwards from being hit by a bullet. Splanner? Spackle? It's been driving me nuts.
 
Yep, it's Spall. Thanks! Now I'm seeing some ballistic plates actually have spall ratings and special coatings to prevent it.
