I see people using UTG parts on AR's all the time. I have also heard numerous reports that UTG is for airsoft guns. So what is UTG, Quality, or toy?

eh, I got a few UTG rail guards on my FS2000. I wouldn't buy anything that was supposed to perform a precision function from them. But for rail guards? They makes some very good ones for the money. Comfy and they keep my knuckles from dragging on the rails.

And if someone knocked me for them, I would not give two shits to the wind about it.

I voted both. It is "quality" for some folks and uses, and it is also a toy and is GREAT for airsoft guns..

My first rail was a carbine length UTG rail on a 16in bushy.

It is a great rail system for the beginner or someone who just wants a basic but mid-quality rail for a VFG or light and arnt doing any serious work with the rifle. range shooter here and there SHTF home gun etc.

The rail is heavier than your top of the line rail systems like daniel defense, LaRue, etc.

It gets the job done if your looking for a cheap alternative for a rail.

I've got the carbine length rail on my bushmaster. Not as good/nice as the Vltor, Knights or YHM i've got on my other carbines, but then again I only paid $60 for it!

this stuff is popular with the airsoft crowd. If you depend on it I'm almost certain it will fail. Kinda like tossing a super charger on a stock high milage motor, it will work but for how long and how well?
I have a UTG light/laser its crap but works good for plinking especially with new younger shooter and if it gets messed up. your out 30.00 instead of 300.00
I also have http://u-t-g.com/zen/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=71 I have that mounted on my glenfield model 25 right now. It is a neat set up and functions. only thing is it feels cheap. I cant tell whats plastic or aluminum ???? but for 35 bucks its working.

You need a UTG is a mid range quality toy choice

I have some UTG stuff. It works, but it doesn't offer the precision and durability that higher end gear offers. For the price, though, it's an excellent option.

I have two carbine length quads in use now. I'll admit it's more for the look than anything else as I prefer the standard guards but it seems like a well machined part and installs solidly and as said before the rail guards are comfortable. As for how it would hold up who the hell knows...I'm not planning on going into battle anytime soon.[wink]

it an airsoft brand. their stuff only fits on real firearms because airsoft guns are meant to be exact replicas of their firearm counterparts. what holds up on an airsoft m16 great will easily fail when used on a real firearm, as the stresses exherted on the part will be exponentially higher than what it was originally designed for. just my 2 cents

I was wondering the same thing about UTG. I have been debating buying a rail system for my Golani and it's either $300-$400 for a good rail system or about $70 for the UTG one. There is no middle ground one I can buy although CAA makes a polymer one for it for about $60-$70. That's the only reason I am hesitant to buy the UTG is because of it being airsoft designed.

Being Airsoft designed doesn't bother me, I want to know whether it holds up.

The problem is, most people who disavow their use on actual guns do so because of the airsoft design. That's not unreasonable, after all, you don't want to have the rails on your rifle fail, but it means that I can't find many testimonials that indicate whether it actually fails on real guns, and under what circumstances. That's what I'm looking to find out, but all the reviews I've found are "airsoft piece of crap (didn't actually test it)" or "I mounted it on my ar-15 without issue, looks great". I have no trouble believing that their under-engineered for actual firearms, but I haven't seen a good explanation of how from an actual engineer, and there isn't enough data floating out there to explain why. Since the difference in price is enough for me to get a new Moisin, it seems like someone should have given this some more serious analysis by now.

I guess I'd like to be able to compare them side by side in person to really pass judgement. Granted it could be completely fine but I have learned in the past you get what you pay for and I hate buying poor quality. I've burned myself too many times buying cheap because I wanted to save a buck. Now I try to scrutinize purchases a lot more. Unfortunately I don't think any local stores carry both.

Anything UTG makes that was originally designed for Airsoft will be... well a toy.

On the other hand not everything UTG makes was originally designed for Airsoft. They started off with Airsoft accessories but more recently they have started producing "real" firearm accessories. A while back I purchased a rifle with a UTG rail system on it and my impression of it is that it is a little heavier and chunkier than a name-brand quad rail but it gets the job done and I have no fear of it being flimsy or breaking, quite the opposite in fact. My intention had been to replace the rails but after taking it to the range and abusing it for a while I decided replacing it was pretty far down the list of things to spend money on.

If you are shopping on a budget it is not the worst choice in the world... but you need to do your homework. Is the specific product you are looking at a POS? I don't know... sometimes it can be hard to tell without holding it in your hands.

If the product you are thinking of is designed for a weapon that is not available in Airsoft (like the UTG quad rails for the Saiga-12) then there is a decent chance it will be of reasonable quality.

Personally I will not buy UTG products for two reasons. First is because because I am picky and I typically demand more than "reasonable quality". Second is that it is made in China. I attempt to buy American whenever I can and there are some excellent "Made in the USA" brands out there for just about anything that UTG makes.
