Tinnitus, hearing aids, any cure ?

This is ridiculous...My VA Doc recommended I go to audiology to scope out hearing aids, anybody's tinnitus has been successfully treated by hearing aids?

Gib
Following. I have it pretty bad also. I can hear ok in normal situations, just have that constant background ringing. If I’m in a restaurant or somewhere with background noise, I can’t hear a normal conversation.

It really sucks.

Yup, life long sufferer, shooter, (started in the 60's, wtf is ear protection) musician, I have constant ringing in both,
just retired from DoD, basically can kind of hear but told massive hearling loss in left ear, go figure Im a lefty,
hearing aids just make it worse....

Sucks doesnt even describe it, background noise and I cant hear a damn thing...

No cure I’m aware of. Your brain can get somewhat used to it over time, but no cure yet. Trying to sleep is the worst for me. I use two different white noise machines to help me sleep, and also in my office to work. My brother tells me his hearing aides produce a white noise to help drown it out. I don’t know what model, but he gets them from Costco

same. my wife tells me I'm going deaf.....get checked, etc. I have....they told me the problem and I'm stuck with it

I have been getting ringing for about a year. I just realized that lack of sleep appears to trigger it for me.
Well, as a bunch of things that will trigger it beside loud noises, one of them being coming off VA meds....lol in fairness, I was in the service before the advent of hearing loss prevention...

Same, it completely sucks. I advise anyone to be more careful with their ears than I was. Shooting anything but a 22 and I will wear plugs and muffs, if I could triple up I would. And I don't cheap out on muffs, I buy/wear the ones with the maximum reduction I can find. I also wear plugs or muffs with anything that makes noise, any additional damage at this point adds to my hearing loss and tinnitus. My brother-in-law plays in a band and I wear plugs if they are playing inside, don't really like to go because of the noise level (at times they hit 130 db on the app on my phone) but sometimes I have to be social to keep the peace.

Some nights I have to turn on the TV to sleep. I have thought about pursuing hearing aids for my hearing loss but I can’t imagine them helping tinnitus.
I found a meditation app called Balance. It has some sleep sounds, including ocean waves. I use that when I go to sleep.

Lots of audiobooks help me. Concerts with fitted protect from making it worse. It’s been getting to the point where any amount of background noise causes a complete deafness while in a conversation.

I can have conversations in restaurants anymore. I just can’t hear enough to have an intelligent conversation. If I can see someone’s lips that helps.

I keep a fan on my nightstand that is on every night. Helps keep the ringing at bay. I’ve had it for so long that I can ignore it for the most part. The VA said there’s nothing you can do for it so the hearing aide thing is news to me.

The one thing I hate it is when the ringing goes nuclear, sound wise, for some reason and then subsides. No clue why that happens.

Sry to read about this guys.

My mother has tinnitus and she was never in the military nor was as she a shooter. She did have four noisy kids though.

I take great precautions with shooting. I only ever shot deer without hearing protection with a 12g and that leaves the ears ringing for sure. Tried 9mm once and that was a bit shocking too. Above that I used plugs and now Walker noise canceling muffs which seriously cut out every shot. Amazing.

For small engines and other machines I use protection as well and I use those machines very often.

I’m not sure what will happen in another 20 years when I’m 65 but time till tell.

The VA offered me hearing aids for my tinnitus, but I declined because my hearing comprehension test is still fairly good and I'm able to control the tinnitus with a countervailing noise. I run a fan in the bedroom at night and a mobile HF radio in my truck by day. I suppose if the VA offers you free hearing aids and you believe it may help, take them up on the offer. When I get a chance, I'll ask my BIL whether the hearing aids the VA gave him helped his tinnitus. In his case though, he needed the hearing aids after 20 years of active duty.

I’ve had it for almost 40 years now. I miss remembering some sounds like birds chirping, but for the most part I’m fine with it.

I don’t think I’d get it fixed if they did find a cure. I’d probably go nuts without the sound.

Some of us are an example of what's to come for all the stupid crap we did from our younger years until now. You're almost in the club.

[rofl]
