We Are Guns - Status

A friend of mine told me yesterday that a lot of gun shops are supporting Reilly because he goes after the mail order joints

Doesn't sound very realistic to me. Consider that most retail order stores want nothing to do with shipping anything to Mass.

Reilly is not only hurting the local gunshops, he's also taking away business from out of state retail stores who can't ship to Ma. No ammo, no AG approved handguns, no mags...etc. etc.

Never underestimate the shortsightedness of the small businessman. :D

The reason many of the mail order houses won't ship here (MA) is because Reilly has gone after them and it is cheaper to simply not ship here than to fight him for a tiny number of sales.

The reasons that some local retailers could like this is that they see out of state cheap ammo as a threat to their profits. Preventing someone from buying ammo cheaper elsewhere sounds like a good idea to them. They love the money they make off of expensive pre-ban mags, too. Having only a limited number of handguns available to sell also makes it somewhat easier to compete against other stores too, since the inventory doesn't have to be terribly extensive, thus requiring less capital to keep in stock.

This is just my opinion, though.

"Another comment about Reilly's run for governor. A friend of mine told me yesterday that a lot of gun shops are supporting Reilly because he goes after the mail order joints.

Can this possibly be true???"

Yes. When Reilly started his anti-ammunition pogrom several years ago, one of the top 5 dealers in this state - and probably the largest in my county - told me he had "no problem" with the AG's actions because it eliminated out-of-state competition.

Lenin said that the last capitalist would sell his executioners the rope he was hanged with. The same could be said of certain selfish and short-sighted dealers.

Note that this dealer STILL does not stock jacketed bullets in bulk, despite numerous requests. Fortunately, I have one or two mail-order suppliers that still ship to me.

[roll]

This is probably true, based on some discussions with GOAL and others when it all hit the fan.

The short-sighted view of many dealers is "Good, anything that MAKES the MA folks buy local is good for me." The MA dealers org does NOT like the fact that anyone could order cheaper online from some distant places. So they weren't about to fight with Reilly on his clamp-down against competition.

The real problem is that Midway, Brownells, Aim Surplus, etc. are companies that MA dealers USED TO BE ABLE TO ORDER FROM too! These are FORMER suppliers to MA dealers. And most of them stopped shipping to ANYONE IN MA, even if they were an 01 FFL!

Thus, many of these short-sighted dealers have cut off their own noses to spite their own faces!

I don't expect most of the dealers to change stripes and see the "long view" of what Reilly is about.

Wonder if it would be better for the people who bought from him to call the ATF. That is people who bought after June.

Glad I'm not one of them. But I agree with the posts that say it is up to the dealer to know what is Mass legal. I've been told all along that the Mass regs only apply to dealers...

I wouldn't bother contacting anyone. The likelihood that any buyer will get dragged into this mess is probably in the same realm as the likelihood of getting hit by a meteorite while staring at the sky in your backyard!

You'd be better to fly under the RADAR. They know you bought from him. Why give them a reason to investigate you even more.

Well, they would know if he's been maintaining the 4473's as a licensed dealer is required, but that seems like a fairly tenuous assumption to make at this point, doesn't it?

Boy, we should have someone at the state who could look out for and protect consumers from this sort of thing! Who does this guy answer to?

As for those "worst case" scenarios, has that actually happened, or is it just more speculation?
