I look forward to the day when it is no longer necessary. I doubt human nature will change such that that day arrives.

just to clarify my tongue-in-cheek, bellow-the-belt quip, I too support the right of free association.

However in the context of the OP asking for the public's support for a club that excludes 50% of the population, it just seems a little too ballsy.

An excellent point. How do you feel about the NRA using donations to fund Women on Target? How do you feel about state fish & game departments running/sponsoring Becoming an Outdoorswoman?

Not being snarky at all. I find this issue, and the layers of reactions/rationales as it is considered very interesting.

Also, I liked the quip. Got a snicker out of me. :)

I really don't have a problem with those programs at all. I've seen so few women in my shooting and hunting classes or at the range (most of whom come with a man) I really feel that the women only classes can only help PROMOTE shooting sports.

All the clubs I've belonged to have been more family orientated--and I don't even have kids! So it just strikes me as odd that I guess a single mom with two boys couldn't join? Weird.

I don't got a problem per say if a club wants to be men only. Just sucks for women shooters if its the only one not to far out of the way for them.

Nicole I see donations to NRA and permit cost etc going towards female geared groups a great thing. They get women shooting hunting etc that might never have with out those programs . Makes for a bigger group to be pissed off and fight back for lack of better words .
Also those groups can help break the ice with a wife/girl friend and open up more things you can do with each other .

I'm weird and view people as equals till they prove me wrong .

Devil's advocate:

And if a male-only environment attracts certain men and makes them more likely to shoot and get involved in their club is this not a gain for the entire community? Is one female shooter more intrinsically valuable than an individual male shooter?

Has anyone ever compared the alumni of women's only outreach programs and general outreach programs to see if the focused events actually bring more people into the fold? Any exposure to firearms is a gain for us, but the real goal should be to foster active community members and allies in the voting booths, not just "oh, I shoot a gun once...but yes, universal background checks sound fabulous!"
 
I know the few women I know that know I'm in to guns have all asked me if there's women only classes and women's only gun groups.
So they must work, same way as pink pistoles bring in gays into shooting . My best friend had no interest in gun then one day I liked them on face book . Few weeks later he started asking me info.
Rather deal / learn from some one you can relate more to .



I think the mind set of a most types of males , a male only club wouldn't draw them in to shooting. But some guys would want to join that club to get away from women . But I'll never under stand that mind set 95% of the day I'm around dudes .

I do see your point though. My gf does a few women-only events up here. It seems to attract a very interesting and strong group of females.

Ah, but you are using anecdotal evidence from the wrong end of the problem! Do women attend women-only events? Of course, or we wouldn't still be holding those events! Would a "Shoot Free Ammo in my Full-Auto Guns-you've-seen-in-Call-of-Duty" event bring out young men who weren't raised in the gun culture? I would wager yes! But would it have the end result we need?

The better approach to find what works would be to ask the actively pro-2A women you know how they got into guns. And why that worked for them. I want to know what sort of introduction makes people stick with the shooting hobby and grow into the people who volunteer at their clubs, bring in more new shooters, donate to worthy 2A-related causes, and vote/contact their legislators on the basis of constitutional rights.

[laugh] I don't get it either. But there's plenty of things people do that I don't get. But I did see one of these clubs up close, and there were a lot of guys that went there to shoot. It kept them active in shooting and in the club. Of course, I've certainly seen the same thing at co-ed clubs.
 
It was started as a men's club in the 50's. it's always been that way. There is currently a waiting list for membership. Lets get one thing clear women attend functions and hang out at the club they just aren't members. It's not as if they aren't allowed on the grounds. Within 10 miles there are at least 3 if not 4 unisex clubs.

The classes I've taught this year, have had more than half the class women. The SAS at this club is huge and requiring reservations.

[laugh] Well for one, it attracted my husband - he was an active member at one of these clubs when we first met. As a matter of fact, our first date was a range trip to that club. I may be biased. [wink]

Seriously though, it attracted all kinds of men. There were some idiots, who appeared to me to be relics from bygone eras, but the majority of the men were very nice. They were polite and welcoming to me when I came to shoot and when they held "Family Day" with an open to all comers shooting contest, they were amused and happy when I routinely came in 3rd or 4th overall instead of just winning the "Ladies" Division.

I have been to plenty of women-only events as well. Met some really fantastic ladies. Also saw some behavior, that from my perspective, upheld some of the worst female stereotypes.

End result depends on the purpose I guess. So Yeah and no, might be off on numbers .
but figure 2/3 of the women that go to a women's only shoots are already shooters . The other 1/3 are wife's/gf that got talked into going or ones that saw a flyer or over heard friends and said what the hell and try it out .
So giving a women a day to them selfs to mingle with others and get female tips that male wouldn't know about . Proper stance in heels , matching holsters with purses :) not a girl so I wouldn't know these things lol . So guess it works for that 2/3rds.

The other 1/3 if one women got hooked I'd say it worked . They say pennies add up over time.

And where did they get started? If they did use women's-only programs, why? Was it because they wanted a women-only environment or because those were the best options?

A lot of those women's only programs are great instructional venues. But I have met SO many younger men who are looking for something similar. I think we are missing the boat on this one. I'd love to see a club open these sorts of events up to men too and see what kind of response they get.

They are out there and their numbers are climbing steadily. I myself have had 3 woman in my life end up getting their LTC's due to opening up that world to them. I just helped at a Woman on Target event at HSC, there were 37 woman shooters there. At least a dozen or more of them that I personally spoke with are applying for their licenses.

Get active and speak up to the woman around you. YOu will be surprised how many welcome the opportunity to learn and get hooked. Others just better understand the need for firearms in civilians hands and boost our support overall.

There is still plenty of private clubs catering to one sex or another. I think its a good thing overall to understand its not about excluding one or another its about the enviroment you create when you open it up to both sexes. Sorry ladies but sometimes a mans got to bitch/get away and does not want a female to hear it/be around.

Can they use the range unescorted? Serious question. If I were a member, could my wife stop in after work and use the range?
I join a gun club to shoot.

I was goning to say the same thing. The women only programs are designed to get more women involved.
