I was thinking that those of us in the country will probably have an easier time about it after the SHTF, the cities will be just a mass of crime and looting and all kinds of things.

But at some point you are going to need to do something that can be used as trade to get things you need (meds, food, gas, ext.).

It might be hard in the Northeast but I was thinking of moonshining. This could be used to drink, sanitize, clean, and as fuel, amongst other things. The only problem I see would be making sure I have a steady supply of crop.

So what are you going to do either product or service if you need something after the SHTF(other then killing and stealing).

Disclaimer:
Of course this is all in good fun and I do not advocate the illegal production of alcohol.

I guess it depends on what type of SHTF we are talking about. If we are talking about a total collapse of civilization, I would probably work as a strategic reallocation engineer!

If you can still...you can change between corn and potatoes. So it won't be hard to get something to still with. The hard part is getting sugar.

I think that I would brew up beer as well. I used to brew, so it wont' be hard to get back into it. It may not be good as hops might be hard to come by...but you can still make wort and mash without it...just might suck. But I think that at that time, people won't really care too much about the taste as they will about the effects.

Other than that....I used to do some pipe fitting during the summers when I was working for my Grandfather...and we're going to need to get water and such from point a to b at some point.

Probably farming for the main gig but maybe I'll be a pimp as well. People are going to need more than liquor...

There are going to be openings for warlords as well but there's a potentially high turnover and no retirement plan.

apocalypse Careers

moonshining? excellent chioce. Worked out well for Joesph Kennady and the bouys.

2) Hired Gun
3) Fish Monger
4) Delivery Boy (various commodities)
5) HO (nappy or Knot)
6) Ordiance Articulator
7) Priest

Pretty much most other skills will be not needed.

Priest? How would anyone check on your credentials in this post-apocalyptic world? One more reason to put a clerical collar in your SHTF kit. [grin]

Seriously, since I'm a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist, I'm thinking these would be useful skills. Needles and herbs keep working even when the drugs run out. My SHTF kit contains acupuncture needles and other tools that would be necessary to maintain health with little more than what nature provides. Herbs from China might be hard to come by after a while, though there are local plants with equivalent functions for many important uses.

Im a blacksmith and knifemaker, so i think i would do o.k. There will be plenty of leaf springs from the dead cars lying around, and lots to burn.

I like Ken's picks... gunsmith or gigolo. Since he knows more about the workings of most modern guns than I do and I'm better looking than him, I pick gigolo.[laugh]

I would turn my valuable writing skills to putting out humorous columns to boost morale. I doubt if that would be paid, though. I could be a line cook or something involving food service. Or maybe just a hired thug with a gun. It's not far from what I am now as a private security officer.

Join a hazmat crew... the sooner we get the shit off the fan the sooner I can get my desk job back and start coding again. I don't know many (or any) computer dorks with guns so we may be scarce after society returns to normal. Could become a VERY high paying profession.

I have no clue what I'd do if/when the shit hits the fan. Hopefully become a survival expert really quickly.

Depends on what kind of SHTF.. but don't suppose there'll be "jobs" in the sense we know of... but, suppose I'd be deep in the wilderness if I make it to there, & would just bug out there til things go back to normal.. so my job would be to protect my family, provide their basic needs of food, water & shelter, etc...

What would you eat? Who fixes your broken leg? What happens when you run out of flour? Do you know what plants are edible? Do you know how to preserve food to get you through a winter? There are very few people who can truly survive and thrive in the wilderness. Most all of us, including myself would be hard pressed to just barely survive, nevermind take care of the whole family. Duncan Long wrote a decent article on the myth of backpack survival. If you dont have a stocked place to go you are probably better off hunkering down or banding with others.

Jobs will very much be in demand. It will be trading though and not jobs like we know it. I might spend a week helping a farmer harvest their crop in exchange for x bushels of corn, might trade firewood to a blacksmith in exchange for some tool repairs. There will be very few specialists. Folks like doctors, farriers, and vets will probably be able to stay specialized but the rest of us will have to become versatile at several different jobs.

Well, that put a dent in things.

Guess I'll have to render my services as a driver. Having been a professional driver for over 20 years, I suppose from time to time there'll be need for someone skilled in high speed tactical driving to get communication or VIP across & through hostile territory.

I could drive through a hostile war like environment & pass through unscathed.

Guess realistically though I'd be performing standard labor jobs such as construction like things, farm work, etc, etc... nothing really in particular considering that all my other skills involve computers & electronic communication, doubt these will be of need if SHTF real bad.. OH, I know cars well though & suppose I'd work as a mechanic & fix peoples vehicles in trade for food, etc.... In the case of SHTF with any nuclear devices, 99% of cars out there would not function due to interuptions in magnetic field which causes distributors to not function, thus rendering a vehicle useless... I would hit all the scrap yards & stock pile all the points, condensers & pre 1969 distributors I could find so I can convert any vehicle & get it running.
