What's my choices in a home defense shotgun?

Well, I suppose everyone, as usual, will say whatever they chose is the best.
I have no idea if my choice is the best or not, but I picked up a pristine Winchester 1200 for very short money and put a tube extension on it.

I can't imagine anything else working any better, even for a lot more $

Yeah, I need to clean up the mag tube.

Mossberg 500. Good price, shoots just as good as an 870, and I estimate that a pump shotgun does a fair bit of damage when a perp hears that pumping sound in the dark. nothing quite like it, and everyone knows what that sound is and what comes next.

I second this sentiment. Mossy 500s are great guns, low maintenance, and always go BANG. You can always pick up a used but still very servicable one for short money at most local shops too. And nothing starts the "pants-shitting" like the sound of a round being chambered. Often times that will be as far as you have to go to diffuse a situation.

Mossberg 500A with pistol grip, heat shield, side saddle, 8 rnd capacity and mounted flashlight. Can't say if it's the best, but it shoots damn good when I got to the range with it.

I've seen them as low as $70 for a fairly old but still functioning one. It's not gonna be a pretty one, but it is all you need, and leaves you with $$ for other things. Always a plus[smile]. Firearms are one of the very few things today that AREN'T made to break and need replacing. Mostly because it's a huge liability. So don't be affraid to pick up an old 500 if the price is right.

I also say bang for the buck is the Mossberg 500. If you can fine Pachmayer grips for it get them too

Second the motion for the used gun rack. A good used Winchester 25 or Ithaca 37 can be had for a reasonable price and provide a lifetime of service.

I've got a Mossberg 500 Cruiser in a Mossberg Lock Box. Its small in size, easy to use, functions well, and ready to go should it be needed.

Thanks to JonJ, I finally broke down and bought a defensive shotgun . . . mostly for pumpkin and car shoots however.

I got the last Rem 870 that ZHA had from Stoughton PD's arsenal. Doesn't look like it was shot much and came iwth a mounted Surefire light for ridiculously cheap money.

Keep an eye out for police trade-ins, especially at ZHA (and you might check with First Defense as well).

Remington 870 marine magnum. Built like a brick outhouse, nice finish.

My only complaint is it only holds like 5 shells in the tube. Not the end of the
world, though.

ATI makes a mag extension for 870s that I think brings it up to 8 rounds.

Actually, now that I'm thinking of it, it might be 6. Problem is the way the tube is now, if you "extended" it, it would go beyond the end of the barrel, probably make for a pretty funny looking shotgun.

Thats when you put the crenelated end on it and use it like a bayonet. c'mon you can get way tacticool with that thing.[laugh]

Mossberg 500 here. 20 inch with a side saddle shell holder.

The pistol stock looks cool, but I can't shoot accurately with it. I bought my Mossburg 500 20 years ago and have recently bought a rifled barrel for deer hunting. A Remington 870 is also a wise choice. I prefer a pump action in a critical situation and prefer firearms with a large installed base to assure a supply of parts and gunsmiths who know how to fix them.

I second the addition of a side saddle ammo carrier and a flashlight mounted under the barrel.

I have been very impressed with my Benelli Super Nova Tactical. Out of the box, it's set up for home defense and is as smooth as butter. I have owned 870's and 500's - they have all been super. If you're tight on budget, New England Firearms offers a "Pardner Protector" and for under $200.00, it's impressive. I've sold several of them at Dicks and returning customers love them....We also have an 8-shot Mossy Persuader which I have been eyeballing for a camp gun - $299.00 If you can get your hands on a Benelli Super Nova however, I think you will be overly impressed....

Get a good pump, plenty out there to choose from. Some people like to think that the sound of chambering a shotgun shell will have an effect on the bad guy's bladder and cause him to head for the hills. For me, I'd prefer that the bad guy not know where I am. I'd rather the bad guy not know he's going to get shot until after it's already happened.

Mossberg makes a Marine Kote version specifically for boaters. It has an electroless nickle finish. It is also impervious to fingerprints, dust and the other little hazards HD shotguns are prone to.

Indeed, they do. I've been vacillating between the Marine Kote Mossberg at About $400 retail (new) or the Remington 870 Marine Magnum which seems to be a slightly more substantial feeling version at $$500-$550 price point.

Does anyone have any experience with both and thus the ability to comment on them in a comparative manner.

Oh hell, does anyone have any one-sided bullshit opinion?
