I know it is only April and I am a new member, but I hope there are more hunters in here. I am already getting psyched up...my pic is my boy pointing a friggin mourning dove in swampscott. I'm looking for more places to hunt and train my dog. Any feedback would be great.

I train at Lynn Woods, normally.

No kidding...I go there, but runners get pissy when they see my dog...or worse people walking the main trails. I almost fought a guy because he tried to hit my dog with a walking stick! What do you hunt?

I think I'm the only bird hunter in here without a dog. [sad2]

Bird hunting without a dog is more or less just an armed hike!

Going bird hunting without a dog is like going on a honeymoon without a bride!

Time to take the plunge and get yourself a pup!

With friends who have dogs if they are available. Or I will just walk myself. I think I've only kicked up three pheasants in 2 years without a dog.

I leave the house at 7 and don't get home until 6:30.

I've only had a problem with one runner, and I go there several times a week all year round.

I hunt duck and pheasant, mostly. Well, I hunt just about everything, but duck and pheasant with a pup. I may take her to Maine this year and try her at partridge.

Or come with me to Northern NH. [grin]

Dixidawg...where do you train with the birds? Not a Preserve is it?

I have in the past, but those pics were on private land and we used pen raised pigeons.

I'd strongly suggest joining a dog club.

I don't know much about pointing dogs or clubs, (we do retrievers- very different training) but I have heard lots of good things about NAVHDA:

http://www.navhda.org/

They have some (relatively) local chapters:

Derek also posted some pics here about a trip he made to a club in western Mass:

In the past, I have done quite a few trips here:

http://www.fullflight.com/

Their website is out of date, but give them a call if you are interested. The good thing about these places is that your pup will be exposed to more birds in one day than he will in 2 or 3 years of hard hunting. There's nothing like a couple days like that to really turn a dog into a bird maniac. After all, the old saying:

"No birds, no bird dog"

is true. He needs as much exposure to birds as possible.

Go to one of the club's training days. You will meet a lot of good people with lots of training knowledge and contacts for places to train and birds.

Dixidawg...Thanks for all that info. Believe it or not, I trap pigeon on the roof of the buildings I manage in Lynn! I will look at the info you gave me and I know it will help. I have a dog with a great nose, a new benelli, and an itchy finger...I even just bought a DPMS...I am getting married in May and the future one can't even see in my safe anymore!

I trin my Labrawieler using dead duck decoys and blanks in the .22 pistol.

Give that a try. The noise make scare away the joggers.

SPRINGTIME Hunting Opportunities. Lets go shoot some COYOTES!

Or would anyone like to get a group together to go shoot some RED STAGS out at Hindsite Farm in Maine. No Licence Needed!

The hot sauce comes in regular edition, and a limited edition. The limited edition is limited to 75 bottles with labels printed on gold foil. They're hand signed and numbered with a price of $49.50 each.

Bottle number one in the limited edition is being set aside for a special price of $125,000, which includes the "Hunting Camp Excursion". Basically they'll set up a barbecue for you and 125 of your friends anywhere in the USA. They'll hand out orange-colored hunting vests for everyone, and serve up some really good grub.

Love dogs, they just don't do well on my schedule. Love hunting with them, a lot more fun that way, but given a choice between 'don't hunt at all, because you don't have a dog' and being my own dog and seeing 5% of the birds a dog would, I'm going hunting!

Just an armed hike......is there another kind of hike? [smile]

Above Knightsville Dam in Huntington is nice (and stocked), usually not crowded, or the WMA in Windsor, or Peru....

There is a lady locally that trains pointing dogs. She raises homing pigeons.

She goes out and plants them, then takes the dogs out. Dogs point, and she flushes them. Birds flush, and are back at her house before she gets there.

Not if every day is "take your pup to work day"

Agreed. I'm so lucky that I can take Josey to work with me. During our busy season, I'm out from 5am to 7pm, & it wouldn't work for an indoor dog.

Dixidawg, those are great pictures!

I'm a huge hunter but never hunt in mass.

i live outside Boston and hunt in Warner/Salisbury NH almost exclusively, the one time i hunted ma i camped out at Wompatuck and got up early to hunt turkey last year, didn't hear or see anything and on the walk back to the truck with my buddy we came across a couple walking their dog on the path, we were all decked out for the hunt, full camo, camo shotguns, backpacks etc... they were absolutely horrified the woman came over and said what are you doing I'm calling the police you cant have guns in the park!!! while her husband stood quivering across the path (obvious who wears the pants in that relationship) we informed her that not only is it legal but we signed in with the rangers when checking in and showed the highlighted map that the ranger made for us to show where he had seen some toms the week before(awesome guy), she still insisted that it was illegal and would be calling the park ranger when she got back to the car, we said have a nice day and walked away

I'm sticking to NH, great gross pheasant woodcock and GREAT people!
