Last Tuesday I stopped on the way to work to gas up my truck, and I bought a $10 scratch ticket that proved to be a $20 winner.

On the way home Tuesday evening I stopped with the intention of cashing that ticket and getting a $20 ticket in exchange. But at the last minute I instead decided to throw in the extra dough and splurge to buy a $50 ticket.

I tossed that $50 ticket in my laptop case and did not think of it again until sitting down to breakfast with my wife very early Wednesday morning.

I began scratching and revealed a $1000 spot and told my wife, then another $1000 and told my wife, then another $1000 at which point my wife said to stop telling her or I would jinx it.

In the end it was a $20,000 winning ticket. [banana] (in case you are wondering, the state took $1k and the feds $4.8k)

So it has been agreed, we (she) gets new leaf-guard style gutters on the house, and I get a tactical style semi-auto shotgun.

Doing my research it seems that a Beretta 1301 would be the choice of many people. In reviews it is highly praised even over the admittedly more rugged, but heavier and slower cycling, Benelli M4. Also the M4 is $2K now.

However the Beretta 1301 does go for $1700, so should I be considering the Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol which by all accounts is a great gun for the price of about $950.

Yes, I know I am at risk of having @drgrant call me a lottery winning skinflint, but hear me out...

I have never owned a semi-auto shotgun.
The 870 pump shotgun I own seldom gets fired.
I know I would shoot the semi-auto more often because it looks like fun and that's why I want it, but I'm not into 3-gun competition shooting or similar, so it would still just be a range toy and home defense purchase. Although I might expand my horizons with some classes or such.

Keeping in mind I will still need to put an optic on whichever one I buy, and the $700 difference between the A300UP and 1301T would buy a legit rugged optic like a Trijicon or Aimpoint, plus some accessories like shell carriers.

So would a novice like me even appreciate the difference between the two Beretta? Should I get the A300UP and some swag, or should I just go for it and buy the better gun, the 1301T, while I have the scratch???

Remember the wife is expecting them gutters. ;)

Nice! I’ve heard good things about the 1301 Mod 2. See if you can find one out there before the ATF(?) ban on them. I believe it was a capacity issue that led to the rule change, but someone here knows better than I do.

yes, you should research more. 1301 is a great gun, and is considered to be a better choice than a300.
a400 has better anti-recoil feature in the front of the stock, that helps to keep shotgun on target better.
that encircled area compresses and greatly reduces recoil, it is quite a very nice feature to have.

1301 has no such feature by default but you can buy and retrofit it later, but it will be at the base of the stock, not in front.
so stock will move/slide on your cheek when it does it. it is not too bad, but a400 design is better.

a400 and 1301 have same receiver and mechanics which are considered to be superior to a300.

does it really matter or not is really up to you.
i am also not sure if a300 does accept larger longer mag tubes, but 1301 does for sure.

i would also buy - well :) - i did buy it - a long competition version of the shotgun, as for a pure tactical i would get a shorter simpler pump one.
a good longer semi-auto 1301 competition or an a400 is a universal shotgun you can hunt with, or shoot skeet, etc.

i got 1301 long ago, and then did regret a bit not getting a400, but they are really very similar.

Nice haul.
Funny story.
We were talking taxes at work the other day when the resident cheap bastard reveals he hit Mass cash for 100 large. In November.
Never bought lunch, a beer, or so much as a f***ing donut.
Nice friends I got.

I have no beretta tactical experience… but, I opt to hide the money until you can swing the bennelli.
If you’re not a shot gunner… you may HATE shooting it.

Plenty of beretta semi experience shooting clays… nice guns.. but imo bennelli is still the standard tactical.

And the bennelli would be much easier faster to trade or sell.

If your 870 seldom gets fired, what makes you think a 1301/ m4/ A300 is going to get fired more or get more use? Just saying you might be disappointed...
How about a real Python (not the new crap)?

Just spitballing here....

Congratulations op. Unfortunately, fortunately they don't have the lottery here. My wife is asian and loves to gamble. Unfortunately she isn't very good at it. I have a 1301 and really like it. It is a bit lighter and is faster than the benelli. You can't go wrong with either.

Exactly how much of his money are you entitled to, you commie?

Your coworker sounds like a "i won't tell anyone if i hit the lottery but there will be signs" kind of guy.
Are you paying attention?

Holy Cow.....people actually win on scratch tickets!! LOL! Congrats!!

I have an A300 Ultima and have shot the 1301. I originally wanted the 1301, but after shooting both and reading a lot - the slight difference in gas system wasn't worth $700 to me. For the average Joe who doesn't compete, you'll never notice the difference in speed between the two. The A300 is dead nuts reliable.

I'm a big fan of the A300. While the 1301 is superior, its superiority is not commensurate with the price difference. The only way I'd ever buy the 1301 is if I won the lotte.........um, on second thought..........carry on.
I agree with this, love my A300.

However I think the earlier statement regarding whether or not you will use it given the usage on your 870. Is the best question.

Finally whatever you think you want go and try it out. Or better find a friend who has one to shoot.

Yup. No. No unusual activity.
No new cars, trips, high end purchases. FFS he owns one gun and it's a Ruger Mark III he bought off some widow for like $150.
There's other things that I won't get into but it's not like he's poor.

I've had my 1301 mod2 for maybe 3 weeks and have put over 1000 rounds through it since then.
Absolutely my current favorite gun.
Recoil is negligible with proper technique and it eats everything from target to defensive loads equally well.
The Ultima Patrols are really nice too, I'm going to get one to keep in the truck safe full time.
