Winter Warrior 2021-2022 Postal Match for Iron Sight Military Rifles

7 degrees this morning. Perfect (winter) day for the range! Won't be me however, I'm going to chase birds and hopefully kill them all.

Made it out this afternoon with my 1868 Springfield Bannerman special in 50-70. I am Still working on loads for this as well. I may have to make a taller front sight or just aim at the bottom of the target.

Cool! Did Bannerman make any mods to the 1868 or is it just known to have been sourced from Bannerman?

It just appears to be assembled from parts. I’m just assuming bannerman. The barrel is the oddest part. It’s a sleeved musket barrel with 1864 type 2 rear sight. The sights placement appears to be way forward of we’re they usually get installed

They supplied cheap guns to sketchy regimes here and there, correct?
Well they where around in the late 1880s so im sure there where less “laws” then on selling Guns especially if it was sold as “scrap”
Google bannerman firearms or bannerman castle …. I think theres a netflix special on it also?

So today I made it to the range again. Temperature 29˚ not much if any wind and snow on the ground. Brought out my Husquavarna M-38 Swedish Mauser and Quality Hardware M1 carbine...Remembered after my groups went to shit how PPU's 139gr FMJBT performed last winter. I should have made up some more reloads or brought a box of PPU Match ammo... I thought it settled down after the first target and the first 5 shots on the second kinda bore this out. Then I was all over the place. Must be the barrel heats up and goes nuts? The second five I wasn't able to call at all, they went everywhere. So here are some pics...
Shot from a front rest...

You sure thats not a mosin , lol

I was able to get out this past Saturday afternoon. I took 2 rifles that are new to the Winter Warrior match, both in 8mm Mauser. I was shooting some handloads for both....170gr Speer Hot-Cors over IMR4064.

First up was my 1906 Oberndorf Gew98m.

Target 1 - 95-4x
I was getting sighted in here. First few shots hit left, then low so I had to adjust my POA

Target 2 - 99-4x
This thing can flatout shoot if I do my part....it's right up there with my K31. The group could've been a little tighter if I didn't yank one down and to the left.

Rifle #2 was a Portuguese Vergueiro M1904/39. It's a really interesting mix of a Mauser and a Mannlicher design. It's a good shooter....most likely better than what I showed here [laugh]

Target 1 - 91-1x
Getting sighted in here because it was only the second time I've taken it to the range. I was trying to get my elevation dialed in hence the 3 shots in the 8 ring.

Target 2 - 93-0x
It was getting dark at this point and apparently my POA was wandering vertically and to the right. I might have to take this one out again earlier in the day so I can see better.

Great shooting! Both rifles...:D

I think it's time for a little research to make these shoot better. Has to be the barrel getting warm and wandering. I have never seen a rifle go south that fast before. 5 shots then ??!
I have a book somewhere on the Swedes. May try and find torque spec/procedure and try other handloads? I have two M-96 and the single M-38...

Im sure all the “mauser” mods will apply.
Is the lower metal magazine box hard contacting the reciever?
Is the steel bedding sleeve in the rear tang stock hole?
Do the bands fit snug

Have you test fired the rifles with out the upper stock wood and bands installed.

Had it apart last night. Im pretty ignorant of the mauser mods. The barrel bands are pretty snug, I think. 🤔 Was thinking the (PPU factory) ammo and making some careful reloads with IMR-4350. Guess I need to do some research and go back in before shooting it again...thanks.

Some pictures might not be there anymore

Theres a gent on gunboards who sells a “mauser accuracy “ kit.
His directions are pretty good also

Got out this morning , snowshoe in as the club hadn't been plowed yet. Shot 293 with a M39 Finn . Cast boolit and 2400 ,,, prone in the snow with racquettes for a rest ,, going to run it again , it was shooting better than me! Fired a three cat sneeze loads at 20 yards kneeling, the same sight setting, a little 90 grain cast over 3 grains of Bullseye! Love this rifle !!IMG_20220131_122912121_HDR.jpg 42110648854571917351643650734716.jpg67428208516085606561643650988777.jpg

Sweet ,
I was all set to run out to the range and pray the gate was open. Then the washing machine crapped out , so off to my moms to do 3 loads. Local laundromat
Was mobbed!

Went through all the trouble to go shooting and the bnz43 was a dud. Assume crown is gone; has rifling and passes the bullet test, but only 7 hits out of 30 if you include the gong. No keyholes. Was shooting the last of my crummy 50 and 70s Yugo ammo…three duds, 7-8 double and triple taps.

Maybe it was just the ammo. With that many problems with primer detonation you may have had inconsistent ignition and varying velocities.

This is the first 15 rounds through my freshly re-barreled Garand. Shooting in a slung, prone position, coat, glove, etc at 100 yards. The numbered holes are 5 sighters I shot to zero the rifle in. I started with 10 clicks up and mechanically zero'd the windage by moving the front sight.

10 shots for score. Weather was high 40's, but plenty of snow and ice on the range. Ammo was the 125gr TNT with ~48.0 IMR4064, loaded on my 550.

I'm going to call that low shot a 9, so 98-3x. The rifle definitely settled in a bit as I was shooting it, the last 3 shots were x.
